Description: Shows Maori and Pakeha seated and standing close to barrels in the foreground, a dog, then people engaged in various activities close to buildings at the water's edge. Washing hanging on a clothes-line to the right, with the harbour and hills beyond. The accompanying text mentions the long-established nature of the whaling station of Joseph Toms (also known as Geordie Bolts) and the fact that Toms also ran an inn and a ferry service across the harbour from this point. The view shows the house and sheds of Toms and his family. Thoms whaling station was situated next to the Ngati Te Ra pa (fortified settlement) at Whitianga, or Paremata as it is now known. The whaling station was established by Joseph Thoms, whaler-trader, and later sold. James Cootes (whaler) also lived there. Cootes' eldest children Tame and Hemi (Tiapo) were born at this station or the pa next to it. The pa was occupied by Ngati Te Ra, a hapu of Ngati Toa. The two principal chiefs of this pa were Te Rakaherea and Te Kanawa. Te Rakaherea later relocated to Poroutawhao (Levin) with Te Rangihaeata were they both lived out their days.
