Description: Unidentified ceremony outside the Te Whai-a-te-Motu meeting house at the Mataatua, circa 1910. In the foreground, seated alongside the carved figure on the meeting house porch pole, are Tutakangahau (left), and Hekerangi. Most are dressed in a mixture of European and Maori clothing. Two men leading the ceremony are wearing kahu huruhuru (feather cloaks). Photograph taken by Thomas Pringle. Description: Shows two Maori women collecting kumara at Tokaanu, near the shores of Lake Taupo. The woman on the right bends to collect the roots from the ground; the woman on the left gathers the kumara from a pile into a large kete. They wear similar blue dresses, with long skirts and a belt at the waist. The woman on the left wears a wide-brimmed hat. The waters of the lake and the opposite shore can be seen in the background On verso of the painting is the hand-written note: 'This picture hung in brother Harry's office in Dannevirke ('Huia / Aeorated Waters') until he retired - then it went to his sister (and mine) Floss, at Homebush, Masterton (Mrs Cooper) (in the late 1930s to early 1950s). Thence to us when Floss died (1980-ish). Rumour had it that Harry got it in lieu of a debt owed on soft drinks'.
