Description: A view from Ngaio or Khandallah looking down towards Kaiwharawharal, with the hotel, the pa and houses visible. Thorndon and Pipitea Point can be seen in the backgroundl, with houses and the gully running parallel to Tinakori Road (now part of the motorway) visible. The faint outline of the hills behind the town can be seen on theleft-hand sheet. Mantell's title suggests that the hill from which he took the drawing may have been called Kohekohe (from the predominant tree in the area, perhaps). Description: Manuscript map with cadastral information showing land offered for sale by Aperahawa, Raharuha and party, north of Devon Road between the Waiongana and the Mangaoraka Streams, Waitara, New Plymouth. Shows the boundary continuing along Pakohenui River and Pukeowaka, two areas of land 'left to Whaitere', the Port Nicholson boundary, Ngahuinga settlement, Mahoetahi Pa, Manukau, Morere, Bele Block, Hua Block, te Putaatutonga and the beach. Description: Shows the interior of Te Punaomara Pa, Waitaki River, with food storage platforms, a whare, cooking pots on a fire, a blanket hung up to dry. A Maori woman is seated on the ground, wrapped in a blanket, and a man is seated in the distance. To the left is a European man drawing in his sketchbook (probably Mantell's travelling companion and fellow-surveyor, Alfred Wills), while the artist's own boots and pack are in the centre foreground. A dog is also seated to the right. A smaller view of a large storage platform titled 'Taraputikitiki' with a ladder leading up the platform and a palisade below it. In the bottom right, a profile head and shoulders portrait of Te Rehe, the Waiteruati chief, a member of the Kati Huirapa iwi, a sub-tribe of Ngai Tahu. On the other half of the page is Mantell's diary for 8 and 9 October 1848, interrupted with a drawing of a utensil similar to an abbreviated watering can, with part of a pa in the background (Waiteruati or Te Wai a te Rua Ti Pa). Description: 6 drawings on one page, showing from top left, two views of storage platforms titled Te Owiwa or Te Owina, and 'forries and futters' [whares and whatas]. The 3rd view is of a pa alongside a river, with a whare and a storage platform, the 4th of a large egg, possibly a moa's egg. The 5th is titled W te R. Remains of pa f... Hap 1851 and another illegible word. It shows several carved niu poles, and a cabbage tree, with a plain and hills beyond and an unidentified object in front on the ground. The 6th is titled Ruataniwha and dated Sept 7, and is signed A. W. (Alfred Wills). It shows a pa alongside a river, possibly the same site as no. 3, with a stand of bush behind it, at Ruataniwha (a name no longer in current use) Ruataniwha was the name of the pa on the site that eventually became Twizel, South Canterbury Quantity: 6 drawing(s). Description: A self-drawn moko by an unknown Maori man, Possibly Te Whatanui, with the different parts of the design identified in Maori, e.g. 'Te ngu' for the upper nose area, 'te wha' for the chin area. The tattoo is for the nose, chin and cheek. In the background is a set of faint drawings by W. B. D. Mantell, including hands holding a plant. On the reverse are several pencil drawings by Mantell of Maori carvings, a whare or cottage, and a hut, inscribed 'Otaki 1844' 'Te Whatanui's whata, Ranginui, Otaki'.
