Description: A view across the water towards Russell. There is a Maori sailing canoe with two triangular sails to the left. J. S. Polack's house is the furthest left building among others along the beachfront at Russell in the background. Kororareka Pa, behind its palisades, is on the right, with two storage platforms (pataka) visible above the palisades A pencil drawing in one of Martens' sketchbook in the Mitchell Library is the preliminary drawing for this watercolour (ZPXC 294, p. 41). The pencil sketch is titled Native settlement in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand and is dated April4 1835. It shows a small sailing ship near the headland to the left, in the position occupied by the Maori canoe with two sails in the watercolour. The details of the pa and European houses along the shoreline in the background are very similar in both drawings Martens was visiting the Bay of Islands aboard H. M. S. Beagle, with Charles Darwin, when he drew this scene. Other Titles - Kororareka Russell Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
