Description: Shows the front of a small single-storey cottage with thatched roof and a verandah supported by five pillars. The cottage has two or three front windows and a front door, two chimneys and a lean-to, with a picket fence running from the house on both sides. A circular garden bed is in front and a cabbage tree, flax and another plant, possibly a fern, are to the right The Rev. Dr Robert Maunsell lived in this raupo cottage from 1838 to 1843. It was superseded by a 6-room wooden dwelling that burned down after three weeks' occupation. Maunsell and his wife were hosts to Governor Hobson in March 1842, with Chief Justice Martin, Abel Best and Edward Shortland also present. Dr Johnson was away from New Zealand between November 1844 and November 1846. He must have made this drawing from an earlier version or possibly initialled and dated it when he gave it to Mrs Hobson in England Other Titles - Maraetai Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - J. Description: View looking down onto Lake Rotorua, with Mokoia in the distance. The Ohinemutu peninsula is on the right with steam rising from amongst the Maori whare. In the foreground is a whare on the left, a palisade and several Maori figures. Probably copied from a drawing by John Johnson or a copy of that drawing by Cuthbert Clarke. See Cuthbert Clarke;s 'Ohinemotu. From an outline by Dr Johnson [1849]' a conte drawing in the British Library (Add. MS 19954, folio 29, no. 31) of which the Turnbull holds a photograph. Description: Shows the front of a small European-style hut with raupo roof supported by a series of neat pillars. The hut has one window and a front door and is on a sea-shore. A group comprising a standing figure and two seated figures is on the left and a canoe is by the water's edge in the background. Wiremu Hoete, the Maori transliteration of the baptismal name William Jowett lived at Putiki Bay (now Ostend, Waiheke Island). His house comprised 4 rooms, and he had been converted to Christianity by Robert Maunsell of the Church Missionary Society. Wiremu Hoete (or Howete) was named after the Secretary of the Church Missionary Society, William Jowett (1787-1855). See 'Mrs Hobson's album...' by Elsie Locke and Janet Paul. Description: Looking across the harbour out to the entrance, with Paratutai Rock to the north of the entrance. A group of three people, possibly two Maori (dressed in cloaks) and a European (with broad-brimmed hat and staff) are standing looking towards the sea. On the verso of the drawing is a map 'View of the entrance to the harbour of Manukao from Puponga Head'. It shows the harbour bar, Puponga Head, an anchorage just east of the Head and opposite Puponga Point a bay with an illegible inscription, possibly Orua Bay and 'Missionary ...' Dr Johnson was part of Lady Franklin's party from Auckland in April 1841, which visited Manukau Heads, Orua and James Hamlin's mission station, on the way to Waikato Heads and Rev Maunsell's Mission Station.
