Hoyte, John Barr Clark, 1835-1913 :[Gladwyn Wynyard's house, Devonport, ca 1870]

Description: View of Gladwyn Wynyard's house from a rocky vantage point. Gladwyn Wynyard was the son of Colonel Robert Henry Wynyard who held various positions of high office through Sir George Grey, being Lieutenant-Governor of the province of New Ulster (North Island) in 1851. The house has a verandah with two doors opening on to it and two double hung windows either side of each door. Smoke is curling from two of the three chimneys and a variant of the white ensign flag (the Union Jack has been placed in the centre of a white background instead of alongside the flag pole) is flying in the left hand side of the garden. A small female figure identifed (in the Dunbar Sloane auction catalogue, August 30 and 31, 2000, Wellington, p 25) as Gladwyn Wynyard's wife "Miss Nuki" wears a blue dress and white shawl. With her back to the viewer she walks in the garden on the right hand side of the house. The garden is well established with a row of small fruit trees in blossom in the centre right. A large willow tree with taller trees behind dominates the left foreground. The land at the back of the property looks well cared for with a fence running along the top of the hill behind. A descendant of Gladwin Wynyard reports that the site of the house was the triangular block in the junction of Calliope Road and Clarence Street (Lot 21A in Section 2 of the Takapuna Parish, being 4acres, 1 rood, 15 perches). It is highly probable that the flagstaff shown is the government flagstaff north-east on Mt Victoria. (AT 13/14/1, 23 May 2001). Other Titles - Gladwin Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows view of house from field in front, cows, stone wall at left (still partly standing). The garden is shown as being on three levels, terraced and connected with short flights of steps. Young trees are planted around its perimeter, including a Norfolk Pine or similar conifer. Two small outbuildings are shown in the right background and the family is standing , leaning on the rail on the front verandah. A small cottage is amongst the trees to the left. Description: Cabbage trees and flaxes amongst large rocks on the banks of Lake Pupuke with further trees on a spur of land across the water. Rangitoto Island is in the background. The view is from Auckland's North Shore Mary Bartley (later Stafford) lived at Northcote on Auckland's North Shore. She married Edward Stafford in 1859, the year before Hoyte arrived in Auckland. Dr Carl Fischer, a fellow-artist, also lived at Takapuna on the shores of Lake Pupuke. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Signed: J. Hoyte; Recto - "Scene in N. Zealand (near Auckland) near where Mary Bartley lived" [on label beneath the work. The title is taken from the original mount, now discarded Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
