Description: Shows beach at Sumner, looking east towards Cave Rock and Scarborough Head. Two boats stand off the shore. The scene is lit by moonlight Previously entitled "The Sumner River, Canterbury, from the Christchurch Road. Dating suggested from the date on "The Sumner River, Canterbury, from the Cave Rock" by the same artist (A-027-016) There is no geographical feature known as the Sumner River. Sumner Beach stands outside the entrance to the Christchurch Estuary, which is fed by the Heathcote and Avon Rivers Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [Title] The Library holds Hodgkins' preliminary drawing for this view and another of Shag Rock in a sketchbook, E-016-4-011/012 Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
