He may have been related to Charles Henry Howorth, although he was not his father. Charles Henry Howorth was the son of another Dunedin lawyer, George Howorth. The painting may have come into W. M. Description: View of a large building, possibly the side of the Princess Theatre, with an advertisement for a production alongside. Steps lead up a hill to the left, and shops and businesses are in the ground floor, including a chemist's shop. The names Davis, J Kirby and Mr J Hewit are visible. A gas street lamp is on the near street corner in the right foreground Mr J G L Hewett was practising as a solicitor in Dunedin by 1898. The premises depicted may be his Drawn on the back of a folio-sized printed sheet of paper for the Standard Property Investment Society, Howorth and Hodgkins, Solicitors, Dunedin. Description: Portrait of Dr Stuart seated in an armchair. Preliminary oil sketch for finished portrait held in a Dunedin Collection. Exhibited at Dunedin Public Art Gallery and toured New Zealand with exhibition "William Mathew Hodgkins and his circle", October 1988 to June 1990. The final portrait, owned by Otago Girls' High School, was mentioned in the New Zealand mail, 30 March 1894, page 21 column d.
