Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Titahi Bay northwards to Pukerua Bay, and the Horokiwi Valley, Wellington. Shows unnumbered subdivisions of land around the Harbour, Jackson's Hotel, Thom's Hotel and whaling station. Shows several Maori pa sites, including Pa Warakoua on the southwest side of the Harbour, an unnamed pa near Titahi Bay, Taupo Pa and surrounding Native gardens, the Native path from Taupo Pa to Pukerua, Wairaka Pa near Gibralter Rock, and a settlement at Pukerua. Map probably drawn in 1844 or 1845, according to Drawing and Prints. Also shows several numbered views that relate to sketches housed in Drawings and Prints. Description: The sketch of the Patea district extends from the Kaupokonui Stream on the Waimate Plain to the Patea River which includes areas of military settlements and Native Reserves. Settlements, tracks, a redoubt, a camp and an old mission station, rivers and Gent. Chute's Track is named. Includes the name of Bradshaw, possibly at the site of his house. Te Ngatu o Te Manu is now a park area situated between the Kapuni and Inaha Stream in the Taranaki Region. The sketch shows the clearings of Te Maru and Te Ngatu o Te Manu in an area of heavy bush with a track between the two places and passing through an unnamed cleared area. Within the clearing of Te Maru is Ouru Creek and the track to the settlement of Te Ngatu o Te Manu which includes sites of buildings, sites of three clearings, a whare, tracks, two of which are named 'Track to Te Kauae' and 'To Ruaaruru'. Some clearings include notes stating 'with burnt stumps and felled trees'. Another sketch showing Te Ngutu o te Manu and Te Maru clearings = MapColl-832.2hkm/[ca.1868]/Acc.1926 is the duplicate copy. The second copy of this map is not linen backed. Catalogue card states that Charles Heaphy drew these maps. No authority for this information given. Handwritten note states 'S.P. Smith in diary 29 October 1866 states he was asked by Governor Grey to make a map of this area. This is probably his'. Description: At the top of the page, a view looking down on the Maori defensive earthworks (trenches) at Rangiriri Pa, Waikato. At the bottom of the page, oriented upside-down are, on the left, a plan view of a pa at Golden Bay (Massacre Bay) visited by Heaphy in the mid-late 1840s. On the right is a cross-section view of the stockade around the pa. The text below 'Section of walls near a gateway' [Massacre Bay] reads in part: The stockade was double, an inner line of pallisades standing a foot or 15 inches from the outer wall, which was formed by large posts being planted deep in the ground every 8 feet. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Paramata, Plimmerton and Pukerua districts with Mana Island. Location of several pa sites indicated: Wairaka Pa near Pukerua Bay; Taupo Pa (built 1844) at Plimmerton, Warakoua Pa on Porirua Harbour's North shore, and a pa at Titahi Bay. Also shows location of Jackson's Hotel, Thom's hotel and whaling station, Maori gardens beyond Taupo pa and Maori path to Pukerua Bay. Subdivisions of land are indicated around Porirua Harbour. Attributed to Charles Heaphy until 1993, because sketches referred to in title were thought to be Heaphy's. Reattribution to Brees because 1. Brees was Principal surveyor for the N.Z.Company and the map shows land subdivisions. 2. Handwriting very similar to Brees' on MS map held by the Admiralty (photo held by Cartographic Collection (823 at / 1844-5 / acc 855) 3. Indications of points of view of sketches can mostly be linked with known originals by Brees. The following list gives the numbers on this map followed by titles and plate numbers of the matching illustration from Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847). Description: Shows a canoe with sails on the water, and a pa (likely to be Haera Hau Pa) perched on a cliff promontory overlooking the river. There are canoes drawn up on the narrow beach under the cliff and low scrub and a path rising up the cliff face. The view is from the right bank looking southeast across the river mouth and inland, with the pa on the cliff above the left bank Heaphy visited Patea Pa (and Waimate Pa), Taranaki, in 1839 on a journey with Robert Park. Description: View from Clay Point hill above the junction of modern Willis St and Lambton Quay. The beach in the foreground is lower Willis Street, while upper Willis Street passes up the rise on the far right. The beach in the background is modern Mercer and Wakefield Streets. Cows, goats, two Maori canoes, a couple on horseback and Bethune & Hunter's Stores are in the foreground, with a jetty and sailing ships in the harbour. Further jetties and public and private buildings are in the background on Te Aro Flat. The most prominent building along the waterfront, with a Grecian-style frontage, is the Exchange Building. Mounts Cook, Albert and Victoria are indicated in the skyline above their relevant peaks. For a key to the identity of individual buildings, see negative 15576 1/2. T. M. Hocken's 'Key plan of Heaphy's View of a part of the town of Wellington ... 1885'. The original for this key is in the Hocken Library Pictures Collection. This watercolour was the original for the lithograph of the same title, published in London in 1842. There were also later prints from the same stone produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. See reference number C-026-002 for copies of the lithograph. Reproduced by the Library in 1963 as one of the Queen's Prints, along with its companion view 'Thorndon Flat and part of the city of Wellington, 1841' and Heaphy's 'View of Nelson Haven', also dating from 1841. Description: Shows the ornately carved frontage of a storehouse on two poles, with a notched climbing pole for access. In the left background sit a Maori man and women with a cooking pot and a dog in front of a large whare. There is a wooden enclosure fence with carved posts at the right and behind, including one human figurehead, a pipe in his mouth. There are woven bags of food possibly kumara stacked beneath the storehouse. Mount Egmont, its height and symmetry exaggerated, is in the background Lithograph, entitled "Wata or Provision house at Otumatua" (neg. 1/2-150220-F), was made by an unknown lithographer, after this watercolour, and included as an illustration in Wakefield, E. J. Illustrations to Adventure in New Zealand (London, 1845). A watercolour by Heaphy in the Hocken Library, Dunedin, is titled by the artist 'Gateway at Otumatia Pa'. Description: A view from above Whangamarino Redoubt with three cannons in the foreground. The left one is firing out over river and plain. The river bends at the extreme right, or may join another. The gunboat (Pioneer) is in the river in the centre distance, near a fortification or pa with a flag flying. In a note on the back A W F Fuller quotes G W Rusden's History of NZ 1883, vol. II, page 167: "On the 29th October 1863, General Cameron with Commander Wiseman, reconnoitred Mere-Mere. Two 40 pound Armstrong guns had been previously landed at Whangamarino to command the landing place at Mere Mere. That stronghold was on a low ridge which approached the Waikato river. Traversed rifle-pits occupied the descent of the ridge to the river. Swamps almost encircled the ridge, & the Whangamarino & Maramarua rivers, or creeks, were available to the east for the possible retreat always aimed at by Maoris in their plans of fortification. The swamps were more water-laden than usual. The Maori flag floated in a pah where the ridge was 130 feet high. Every slope & projection from the ridge to the swamps was traversed with rifle-pits..." The mention of the flag appears to mean that the Maori pa is the one with the flag flying in the centre distance. Description: Mount Taranaki in the background of this view inside a pa, showing a provision store, elaborately carved, on poles with a notched central pole acting as a ladder, a Maori woman [?] about to ascend the central ladder with a dead sucking pig, and flax baskets (kete) of supplies stacked at its base to the right. A Maori man is beating an object, possibly fern root, with a pounder on a stone in the right foreground. Two figures are seated by a cooking pot in the background in front of a whare puni or sleeping house, a dog on the right. The decorated barge boards of another whare are visible and the palisades around the pa include a carved human figure with a pipe in its mouth. The accompanying text reads: Chiefly used to keep articles of food. The carving is in wood, and these figures are painted with red ochre, charcoal, and white clay, in quaint patterns. In the back-ground is a ware puni or sleeping-house. Based on Charles Heaphy's watercolour "Provision house at Otumatua Pah, Cape Egmont [1841]" (Ref. no. A-146-009). The watercolour has the background figures and the dog, but not the foreground figures. Description: Shows the palisade of a pa on a clifftop, with figures scaling the cliff by means of ladders coming up from the water level. One of a series of such sketches, the remainder in Auckland Museum (one signed: C. Heaphy), originals for lithographs (held at B-043-015: Ellis 633-636). Waimate Pa was near the mouth of the Patea River, Taranaki. See also Heaphy's 'View on the Patea River, Cooks Straits, 1839' (A-146-004). Heaphy visited Waimate Pa in September 1840 in the company of Robert Park and Robert Stokes. Description: A hill with fern and low scrub in the foreground, with a view across the bush-covered Hutt Valley and Petone to the Wainuiomata Hills, with the Harbour, Somes Island and four immigrant ships, the harbour entrance and Miramar Peninsula. There are houses built by the first European settlers on the beach, possibly along with the buildings of Petone Pa, although the latter are indistinguishable from the settlers' houses. The Pa may be hidden from sight by a low rise to the right. Original drawing for a lithograph in E. J . Wakefield's "Illustrations to Adventure in New Zealand" (London, 1845) Plate 3, with title "Port Nicholson from the hills above Pitone in 1840".
