Description: View from Clay Point hill above the junction of modern Willis St and Lambton Quay. The beach in the foreground is lower Willis Street, while upper Willis Street passes up the rise on the far right. The beach in the background is modern Mercer and Wakefield Streets. Cows, goats, two Maori canoes, a couple on horseback and Bethune & Hunter's Stores are in the foreground, with a jetty and sailing ships in the harbour. Further jetties and public and private buildings are in the background on Te Aro Flat. The most prominent building along the waterfront, with a Grecian-style frontage, is the Exchange Building. Mounts Cook, Albert and Victoria are indicated in the skyline above their relevant peaks. From water-colour by Charles Heaphy; engraver unknown. For a key to the identity of individual buildings, see negative 15576 1/2. T. M. Hocken's 'Key plan of Heaphy's View of a part of the town of Wellington ... 1885'. The original for this key is in the Hocken Library Pictures Collection. A watercolour was the original for the lithograph of the same title, published in London in 1842. There were also later prints from the same stone produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. See reference number C-026-002 for copies of the lithograph. Reproduced by the Library in 1963 as one of the Queen's Prints, along with its companion view `Thorndon Flat and part of the city of Wellington, 1841' and Heaphy's `View of Nelson Haven', also dating from 1841. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Titahi Bay northwards to Pukerua Bay, and the Horokiwi Valley, Wellington. Shows unnumbered subdivisions of land around the Harbour, Jackson's Hotel, Thom's Hotel and whaling station. Shows several Maori pa sites, including Pa Warakoua on the southwest side of the Harbour, an unnamed pa near Titahi Bay, Taupo Pa and surrounding Native gardens, the Native path from Taupo Pa to Pukerua, Wairaka Pa near Gibralter Rock, and a settlement at Pukerua. Map probably drawn in 1844 or 1845, according to Drawing and Prints. Also shows several numbered views that relate to sketches housed in Drawings and Prints. Note on map before copying: Portfolio D, [New Zealand Company], marked & 4 by ? See 'Plan shewing the several points of view of the sketches illustrative of the West Coast' [1844 or 1845], the ink and watercolour original, shelved at B-031-036, held in Drawings and Prints. Description: Hydrographic sketch of safe anchorage on the southeastern coast of Kapiti Island, including Tokomapuna Island and Motungarara and Tahoramorea Islands (named on the map Evan's Island - Whaling Station, Hiko's Island and Raupero's Island). Shows soundings and Rangatira Point. Other Titles - Charles Written on map: 'Copied from a MS [manuscript] belonging to the New Zealand Company April 3rd, 1847'. Written on map: 'This is a convenient anchorage for vessels bound for Port Nicholson, should they be caught by southerly winds in the narrows of Cook Strait...' The description goes on to explain a safe approach to between Kapiti and Port Nicholson and also from Kapiti to the Whanganui River.
