North Head's signal station is included The reference to 'Mrs Churton' suggests the drawing was done after the death of Rev J F Churton in 1853. Description: Comical drawings of officers of the Pandora, along with Gold Commissioner, Charles Heaphy, at the Coromandel goldfields The hand-writing is that of Theodore Morton Jones, the drawing by Charles Heaphy. The officers on the expedition were Lieut. Jones and Messrs Oke, William Stanley, Cuming, William Blackney, Andrew Farmer, Leck, Thomas Hooper Kerr and Ellis. The Pandora's Master in 1852 was Byron Drury and her surgeon was John Jolliffe and they are both mentioned in the captions to the drawings. Extended Title - Spine title: Drawings of the Coromandel gold field. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s) containing 4 cartoons in 1/2 morocco binding. Physical Description: 4 pencil and watercolour drawings 140 x 230 mm Provenance: By descent from Rear-Admiral T. Morton Jones, who was serving as a Lieutenant aboard H. M. S. Pandora, stationed off Auckland in Sept-Oct. 1852. He joined a party of fellow-officers for a gold-prospecting picnic to the diggings at Coromandel. Listed in the Museum Book Store Catalogue (London) in 1915, 1923 and 1927, then purchased (already bound) by Dr Charles A. O. Fox, of Lynch Cottage, Llanmorlais, Gower, Wales. He mentioned them in a letter to the Library dated 14 March 1960 (TL3/1/1) and they were subsequently acquired by the Library after passing through the hands of dealers Newricks and Bethunes.

Description: Recent prints from old photographs of Wellington, originallty taken between about 1841 and 1929. Includes one photograph of a painting of Wellington waterfront from 1841, by Charles Heaphy. Only a few images identify the photographers, the Burton Brothers, Tyree Brothers and James Bragge. The Bragge photograph (looking down to the Harbour from Hill Street taken in the 1880s) was identified from his horse-drawn carriage with his name and occupation emblazoned on the side. Description: Topographic map of Motueka River, from its mouth at Tasman Bay, and showing the intended site of Nelson, inland from Kaiteriteri Harbour, as explored by Brown and Heaphy for the New Zealand Company. Description: View from Clay Point hill above the junction of modern Willis St and Lambton Quay. The beach in the foreground is lower Willis Street, while upper Willis Street passes up the rise on the far right. The beach in the background is modern Mercer and Wakefield Streets. Cows, goats, two Maori canoes, a couple on horseback and Bethune & Hunter's Stores are in the foreground, with a jetty and sailing ships in the harbour. Further jetties and public and private buildings are in the background on Te Aro Flat. The most prominent building along the waterfront, with a Grecian-style frontage, is the Exchange Building. Mounts Cook, Albert and Victoria are indicated in the skyline above their relevant peaks. From water-colour by Charles Heaphy; engraver unknown. For a key to the identity of individual buildings, see negative 15576 1/2. T. M. Hocken's 'Key plan of Heaphy's View of a part of the town of Wellington ... 1885'. The original for this key is in the Hocken Library Pictures Collection. A watercolour was the original for the lithograph of the same title, published in London in 1842. There were also later prints from the same stone produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. See reference number C-026-002 for copies of the lithograph. Reproduced by the Library in 1963 as one of the Queen's Prints, along with its companion view `Thorndon Flat and part of the city of Wellington, 1841' and Heaphy's `View of Nelson Haven', also dating from 1841.
