Description: Shows two Maori canoes, one with sails, pulling in to beach, with detailed drawing of cliff and vegetation in right background. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - C.Heaphy. See overleaf. C.Heaphy. Verso - top of page: Sketch of North West cliff Brown's Island, Thames. The beds slightly inclined to the left are of basaltic ash, and the cliff appears to be a section of the outer or ring crater. The beds above, inclining to the right [left crossed out] seem to be the remains of strata formerly lying on those first described, but which had slid towards the point of irruption on a collapse taking place.
