[Gully, John] 1819-1888 :[Early Nelson. 186-?]

Description: Shows a section of Nelson Harbour in foreground, with hillside behind the part of Wakefield Quay that runs between present-day Victoria Road and Richardson Street. The scene would have been sketched from Haulashore Island, part of which can be seen in the right foreground. In 1900 Harry Vincent Gully was to own a house in this area, possibly the gabled one in the centre, which is redrawn in the left foreground. Date based on comparison with photos of same area. H. V. Gully was a solicitor and town clerk in Nelson, not listed in Wise's 1866-69, is listed in 1880 as living in Trafalgar Street. In 1900 is listed in Wakefield Quay, which is the road around the section of Nelson Harbour shown in this sketch. His house in 1900 may be the double-gabled house on the hill, re-drawn in the foreground. This part of Wakefield Quay is between present day Victoria Road and Richardson Street. c.f. Description: Shows mill buildings and oast houses at the left, on the banks of the Maitai River, Nelson foreshore, in golden light. Dr Bush's windmill can be seen on the opposite bank of the river, along with houses The windmill, on Miller's acre, was burned down in 1867. It was located on present-day Trafalgar Street, diagonally opposite the Nelson Chief Post Office, and was for some time around 1990 the site of Miller's Acre carpark Other Titles - River landscape, New Zealand Compare a very similar view by H. A. Scrivener 'Nelson 1863' (B-061-018), which also shows the oast house, mill and river mouth. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 310 x 498 mm. Provenance: Previously sold at Dunbar Sloane's, August 1994; also at Dunbar Sloanes on 17 April 1991 under the title View of colonial Nelson and the Maitai River (lot 56), and before that in London, at Sotheby's, 24 October 1990 under the title River landscape, New Zealand. (lot 114).
