Description: Shows two carved Maori waka, full of paddlers, three men in each canoe standing to encourage their teammates. The front men standing hold weapons; the middle standing men hold flags; and the men at the back steer their canoes. In the background are two cliff headlands each with palisades on top of them Identified as being Tauranga, with Monmouth Redoubt in the background Overleaf, the first section of the printed page of the journal is a piece entitled 'Boat racing in New Zealand', explaining that the illustration is 'an engraving from a sketch by Captain H G Robley, taken at Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty' See also at A-343-034 (a duplicate of which is at E-106-f-045) for a different version of the image, as well as a version of the scene at A-018-006, based on the sketch by Robley, from 'L'univers illustre': 'Course de pirogues dans la Baie de Tauranga (Nouvelle Zelande)' Extended Title - From: The Graphic, April 1, 1871 [p.293 Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). The lower image shows an inset of four men soaking up to their necks in a rectangular hot pool at Ohinemutu, inset into the top left of a larger scene of the interior of the Native Land Court at Ohinemutu.
