Description: Two images on one page. The upper image shows a group of Maori children on a swing or moari, a tall pole with ropes attached from its top, flying out over a bank, watched by a group of seated adults and children. The palisades of a pa are in the right background and a low hill in the distance. The lower view shows a haka, with naked men in the act of raising oars, watched by other Maori. Canoes are drawn up at the edge of Lake Rotorua and the palisades of Ohinemutu Pa and its higher buildings can be seen behind the men. Both drawings are copied from the work of Joseph Jenner Merrett, without acknowledgement. See the Library's Hobson Album for Merrett's drawing 'A native game' showing the swing. (E-216-017). This was drawn before 1843. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. Similarly, in the Hobson Album, also by Merrett is 'The pah of Oinamutu on the Rotorua Lake', which provides the background Angas has used for War Dance. Description: Shows a double portrait of the chief standing, and his wife seated beside him in the ground. Mungakahu holds a hani (staff with a carved head and tongue), ornamented with parrot's feathers and pieces of dog skin, in his right hand, and is dressed in a black and yellow checked kakahu (flax cloak) with a blanket underneath it. He has facial moko. Ko Mari wears a feather earring in her left ear, has a moko on her chin, and wears a tiki and a woven cloak. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844 Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Scene depicts the carved and decorated tomb (wahi tapu) of the Ngati Rahiri chief Huriwhenua, set within its own fence and with the palisades of a pa for protection. The carved war canoe (waka taua) of Huriwhenua is set upright into the earth and marks where the chieftain is buried. Framed with hills behind and whare (raupo houses) on both sides and beyond. The location is described in Angas' accompanying text as a 'small and now entirely deserted Pah on the shores of Tory Channel, not far distant from the entrance of Queen Charlotte Sound', probably close to Te Awaiti. The site was tapu and Angas did not have permission to draw it. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. It is uncertain if Huriwhenua was of Ngati Toa descent, but he was the principal chief of the Ngati Rahiri tribe from Taranaki. Description: Depicts the whare whakairo (carved house) "Kaitangata" with carved lintel, posts and gables, said by the artist to have been carved by Te Rangihaeata himself. Two figures are seated on the edge of the porch, and a gourd stands on the ground beside them. The carved face supporting the ridge pole is said to represent Rangihaeata himself. Description: Shows five different Maori tombs or mausolea: 1. Mausoleum of E Tohi, the mother of Rauparaha, on the island of Mana. It is richly adorned, covered with wood, painted and decorated with feathers. The body would originally have been placed in a sitting position. 2. An upright sepulchral monument at a small island pa in Tory Channel 3. Another upright monument, differently painted, at Te Awaiti, Cloudy Bay. Both this and the preceding are formed out of portions of canoes. 4. A carved "Tiki", or image, in an old pa near Lake Rotoaire. Beyond the image, is an elevated whata, or box, for holding the bones of a deceased child. 5. A monument to three children, near Te Awaiti, Cloudy Bay. Description: Scene depicting Taupo pa (present day Plimmerton). Shows on the rise in the right foreground a wahi tapu, or sacred place serving as a receptacle for goods and property that have become subject to the law of tapu for a certain length of time. The wahi tapu is constructed of sticks and contains household utensils, skins, calabashes and dried fish, and a garment suspended beneath flutters in the wind. In the right distance behind the wahi tapu is the bay "about a mile from Porirua". Several canoes are drawn up on the beach, and there are four palisaded enclosures containing whare on the shore. Description: Shows part of the outer palisade of the Ngati Toa pa "Taupo" on the mainland at present day Plimmerton. The island of Mana is in the centre distance. In the foreground are canoes belonging to Ngati Toa and there are flax bushes growing in the left foreground. A figure in a striped blanket sits in the left foreground. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. The Ngati Toa pa "Taupo" was probably built and occupied before the Wairau Affair of 1843, where a number of Ngati Toa and Europeans (armed constabulary) were killed in an armed encounter. However, it was'nt until after that incident that large numbers of Ngati Toa returned from the South Island for fear of reprisal attacks from settlers to re-populate the Wellington-Porirua-Kapiti disricts in large numbers again. This pa is mainly associated with Te Hiko-o-te-Rangi, a paramount chief of Ngati Toa, and his uncle Te Rauparaha. Other Titles - Taupo Pa Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). The bottom image shows a circle of Maori watching a salutation ceremony where one warrior is about to throw a spear. Description: Shows a Maori whare with raupo-thatched roof, kowhaiwhai beams in the porch, woven tukutuku panels, and carved central pole. There are also decorative poles at either side of the porch and down the exterior side. The lintels are also carved. Otawhao Pa is in the Waipa area, Waikato. The commentary in "New Zealanders illustrated" says: The two principal figures, with protruding tongues, that are placed on each side of the verandah entrance, are intended to represent Hikarea, a chief of Tauranga, killed at Te Tumu, when three hundred of the enemy fell; and Tarea, another chief, and a friend of Puatia, who was killed at Tauranga. The lower figure supporting the centre pole, is Taipari, a chief of Tauranga, and now a convert to Christianity; he was one of the principal warriors at the taking of Maketu. The two carved spaces further up the pole, are also designed to represent warriors; the upper one is for Tara, who was slain at Taranaki. The figure ornamenting the centre of the gable, represents Puke, killed at Rotorua, and the one surmounting the top, Wakatau, who fell at Maketu. Pokana, the present chief of Mata Mata, then so actively engaged in the Maketu war, has his image under the rafters, inside the verandah, looking down from the ridge pole, with a pipe in his mouth". Kahawai at the right, wears a rich topuni above a European blanket, and holds a mere in his right hand. Kahawai is the chief of the Ngati Hinetu tribe, and lives at Ngahuruhuru in the Waipa district.
