Description: Shows the home of Rev. Thomas Gilbert at Omata, amongst bush. The house is shown stripped of weatherboarding because of the Taranaki War. (The house was not demolished until 1928). See donor's notes, TL 3/1/1/4, 10/7/1985 Identification and attribution from donor A very similar, but earlier drawing by Maria Nicholson, titled 'Brighton Place, Omata' done in 1869 or 1860, was reproduced as a lithograph in Settlers and Soldiers by Rev. Thomas Gilbert (London, A. W. Bennett, 1861), p. iv. Unlike this view, the house is shown with its weatherboard intact, and with the garden looking very tidy.
