Description: Cartoons by David Fletcher from 'The Politician' series, which satirises New Zealand and international political issues. The cartoons feature a set of standard characters who are used to represent various contemporary politicians in the news. The Politician - the MP for Upper Creek- is "inept, greedy and indecisive, and those are his good points". He is always portrayed as a bald fellow with a moustache, regardless of the gender or appearance of the real life political figure he is representing in the cartoon. Other recurring characters include his press secretary and political advisor, Miss Direct; Max, an "uncivil servant" and his right hand man, he is always portrayed as a bald fellow wearing glasses; Rose, the Politician's long suffering wife; and Jim, his hard-working parliamentary colleague and best friend. (For character sheet see DCDL-0025477). As at mid 2015 'The Politician' runs infrequently in the Dominion Post, and is published in Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and South Africa. Based in Auckland, he produces 'The Politician', a daily cartoon strip that appears in The Dominion Post and is syndicated around New Zealand, and to newspapers in Australia, Europe, Britain, South Africa, China, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Previously he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for the New Zealand Herald before becoming a full-time freelance comic strip artist in 1983.

Description: Cartoons by Tom Scott about New Zealand and international political and social issues. Most cartoons in the collection were published after July 2005, with a selection of digital cartoons from 2003. Part of the NZ Cartoon Archive Tom Scott was born 1947 in England, and migrated to New Zealand with his family. He graduated from Massey University in 1972, and began as a political correspondent for the New Zealand Listener in 1973, illustrating his articles with cartoons. From 1984-1987 he worked for the Auckland Star before becoming the editorial cartoonist for the Evening Post (later the Dominion Post). From May 2018, his cartoons appeared in each of the Stuff-owned major dailies (Evening Post, Press and Southland Times). In addition to his cartooning and journalism, he is a non-fiction writer and playwright. He has also produced documentaries, television programmes, and feature films. Tom Scott retired from cartooning for the Dominion Post in March 2019.

Description: 'The Politician' cartoon strip. The minister reports that according to the polls they have gone out on a big lead. A critic imagines the size of the lead if the government had policies that worked. Context - But the Horizon poll shows the spike in support the government received from its handling of Christchurch's earthquakes has levelled out. National now has the same level of support as it did at the last election. The Horizon poll has Act on just 3.7 percent support, National on 37.7 percent, United Future on 1.1 percent and the Maori Party on 2.4 percent. Labour is on 23.9 percent, the Green Party on 9.9 percent and New Zealand First on 7.4 percent. When possible coalitions are factored in, the gap between the two potential governments narrows to 3.7 percent. While National has shed the lift in support it received after the Canterbury earthquakes - from 41.2 percent to 37.7 percent, Labour support also fell, from 27 percent in March to 23.9 percent. Description: 'The Politician' cartoon strip. The Politician asks his staff member to tell the organisers of a petition, even if it is short by 16,000 names, to hold a referendum. The government is planning on ignoring the results of such a referendum. The petition, organised by the Green and Labour parties, calling for a referendum on asset sales fell short of the required number of names. Since the government, on past form, would ignore the results of any ensuing referendum, the insistence on the validity of a petition for a referendum seemed to many to be pointless.
