Description: Shows a fenced compound containing two farmhouses with dense bush behind. A horse grazes in the foreground. Within the fence are two men talking, one leaning on a shovel, another horse, a wheelbarrow, two tree trunks and a stacked pile of planks. The two houses are single-storied with verandahs supported by colums. Part of a third building, probably a farm shed, can be seen on the left. The property is that of Willie Swainson. Description: A small Maori settlement, with a paling fence, a gate formed by a cartwheel and several low huts, probably made with planks. One on the left, has a European-style verandah with a seated person. A plain is beyond with scattered trees, and the cliffs formed by the Rangitikei River can be seen in the distance The name Onepuehu is not in current use. May possibly be Onepuhi at the junction of the Porewa Stream and Rangitikei River, 10 km northeast of Marton Other Titles - Onepuhi Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: In the left foreground a tent, open on one side. Two Maori are seated in its shelter, attending to a pot boiling over a fire. Three Europeans are beside and behind the tent and another Maori man is nearing the group with a bundle of firewood on his back. In the background are Tongariro, Ngauruhoe in eruption and Ruapehu. Original sketch for the frontispiece of Crawford's book: Recollections of travel in New Zealand and Australia (London, 1880). "View of Mounts Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, Puke Onake and Ruapehu". The trip was in January / February 1862 and the Europeans depicted are Crawford himself and Samuel Deighton, and possibly "poor Biggs who was afterwards killed at Poverty Bay" (p. 134), since Crawford mentions that he joined Crawford and Deighton for part of the journey and there are three Europeans shown. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997.
