[Connell, B] :[Wellington Harbour from above Te Aro Flat 1842]

Date: 1842

By: Connell, B, active 1840-1843; Brandon, Constance Mary Anne, 1816-1842; Jack, Frances (Lady), active 1920s-1970s

Reference: A-050-021

Description: View from Mount Cook, looking up the harbour, with a few houses of Te Aro and their fences to the right, a single house visible on the shore in Oriental Bay, and in the distance houses around the shore of Pipitea Point, Thorndon. Ships in the harbour and a cabbage tree prominent centre foreground cf. Mrs Hobson's Album, p. 87, drawn by B Connell, of same view. Attribution based on stylistic similarities, despite different media, & Lady Jack's belief that the work was painted by her grandmother, Constance Anne, wife of Alfred de Bathe Brandon. However it remains possible that Constance Brandon is the artist of this work, since work by Connell in the Rex Nan Kivell collection is copied from the work of William Swainson, and it is possible that Connell's views in the Hobson Album were also copies Other Titles - Brandon, Constance Mary Anne Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 138 x 220 mm
