Description: View of Oriental Bay from the north end of the bay, near Point Jerningham. On the left is the Church of Saint Gerard designed by Frederick Herbert Swan, sited atop a lower flank of Mount Victoria above Oriental Bay. This site was extended in 1933 with the building of Saint Gerard's monastery by Frederick de Jersey Clere. A further low flank of Mount Victoria is shown behind. The two chimneys close to Mount Victoria belonged to the City Destructor which had two chimneys by 1906, the second chimney being built between 1903-1906. This site is now occupied by Chaffers Street New World supermarket. The one chimney on the right belonged to the Municipal Tramways and Power House which occupied the corner site on Jervois Quay and Wakefield Street now the Wellington City Council civic site. The first part on the corner with the chimney was built by 1904. Mount Hawkins is in the background. The second low flank of Mount Victoria with no visible buildings is not easily visible now as the Travelodge Hotel, now the Quality Hotel was built at the base of this flank in the 1960s? with resulting major cutting into the bank.
