Description: A three-masted sailing ship in a storm and high seas, close to a hilly and rocky coastline visible in the background Another version of the wreck of the Alcmene, also by Cuthbert Clarke, is in the British Library (Add MS 19954, f 3 (3)), a crayon drawing showing the ship on a similar angle but closer to the cliffs, heeled over and dismasted Clarke is not known to have witnessed the wreck of this ship, although he was in New Zealand in 1851 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Signed: Cuthbert Clarke... Description: View looking down onto Lake Rotorua, with Mokoia in the distance. The Ohinemutu peninsula is on the right with steam rising from amongst the Maori whare. In the foreground is a whare on the left, a palisade and several Maori figures. Probably copied from a drawing by John Johnson or a copy of that drawing by Cuthbert Clarke. See Cuthbert Clarke;s 'Ohinemotu. From an outline by Dr Johnson [1849]' a conte drawing in the British Library (Add. MS 19954, folio 29, no. 31) of which the Turnbull holds a photograph. The same image was reproduced as a wood engraving in Sir George Grey's 'Polynesian Mythology' (London, 1855). Title from inscription Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Shows a high waterfall amongst bush-clad hills. A large native tree frames the view in the left foreground Vendor's auction catalogue attributed this work to Cuthbert Clarke. ATL attributed it to Merrett on grounds of style, and the hand-written title, apparently in the hand of Merrett, not of Clarke. Attributed to Merrett on grounds of style and handwriting of title. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [Title]; Unsigned and undated. Merrett was in New Zealand from 1841. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Sepia ink and wash, 150 x 180 mm.
