Description: Photograph album of New Zealand and Pacific Island scenes. Most were taken by George Dobson Valentine, in the North Island of New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti; a few were taken by the Burton Brothers in the South Island. Within the New Zealand scenes there are a large number of views inside and out of the Waitomo Caves; and another group show the area around Lake Rotomahana with the Pink and White Terraces before and after the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River. Description: Views of annexation ceremonies, of the local people and their leaders, of Lord Ranfurly and his party which included Naval personel from the Mildura who added presence to the occasions and raised flags during the ceremonies. There are photographs of two lepers on Molokani Island in the Penryn group and the Governor on a pearl shell diving boat on Manihiki. On the way back to New Zealand the Mildura stoped at the Kermadec Islands. Photographs were taken of Sunday (Raoul) and Macaulay Islands, and of the crater on Curtis Island. This part of the album ends with the Mildura in Lyttelton Harbour and the Governor coming ashore in a boat. Most of the rest are scenic shots of the Tourist highlights of New Zealand. There are three photographs of women crossing the Tasman Glacier and boiling a billy. The album ends with a group of photographs of the Channel Islands According to a note at the front of the album, all photographs, other than the New Zealand scenic tourist shots, were taken either by Captain Baynes or P M May, Surgeon, both of HMS Mildura. However, this is one of several albums recording the annexation of the Cook Islands held in the Photograph Archive. Many of the same images occur in all of them and a large number of these came from negatives held in the Malcolm Ross Collection. Malcolm Ross was a New Zealand Journalist who as the correspondent for the Times news paper, accompanied Lord Ranfurly's party on the Mildura, and was responsible for photographing the occasion. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Provenance: This album was offered to the National Library of New Zealand by Isabel Baynes, probably the widow of Captain Baynes. It was selected with some other items in July 1935 by Dr Scholefield, New Zealand Parliamentary Librarian, during a visit to Hampton Court Palace where Isabel Baynes lived. From 1935 to 1998 the album was housed in the New Zealand Parliamentary Library.

Description: Album with [18] pages of images of the Otira Gorge area and the West Coast. Includes views of Bealey Hotel, Porter's Pass, Otira Gorge, the wire ropeway with cage across the Teremakau River, the Grey-Kumara tramway, native bush on the West Coast, horse and buggy under Hawks Crag on the Buller Gorge road, Arthur's pass. Most of the photographs are taken by James Ring, and are inscribed with title, photographer's initials, and photographer's number.
