Description: Cadastral map of northern to central Hawke's Bay, including Mohaka southwards to Napier, Hastings, Waipawa and Waipukurau, as at 1859. It depicts land acquired by the government, boundaries of runs (farms) including settler names, boundaries of purchases and land ownership, Maori reserves, Maori geographical place names, pa sites, Maori tracks, roads and rivers, as indicated on the map's reference key. The Mohaka block includes names associated with land titles, namely Riddle, Anderson; pa sites including Kotokakarunga and Waipapa (beside the Mohaka) and Towitikoko and Waikare (beside the Waikare River). Several geographical places, Maori villages and streams are named. Block lot numbers 1-27 are indicated. The Ahuriri and Napier district blocks include the settler names A Alexander, JGS Garker, William Villers, Cockburn, Munro & Blair, Marshall, HB Sealy, W Ogilvy, M Hill, Dyson, William Gouper Jnr, Gray, Imrie. Named pa sites include Pia Pa Awatoto; named bush areas include Pohui and Puketitiri. The Te Mata and Kidnapper blocks include the names J Chambers, G Moore, A St. Hill, Rhodes. Note on map reads 'Karinema's [Karenema's] reserve under offer' (Havelock North area). Pa site indicated at Marae Totora (Maraetotora) and north and south of Whakatu, Heretaunga, along the Ngaruroro River. Waimarama block is noted as 'in treaty for'. Waimarama and Arana blocks include the names W Gouper, J Montieth; Hapuku's block Chapman, Hargrove and Gouper, HS Tiffen, ES Gurling, E Collins. The Waipawa block includes the names FJ Abbott, Tanner, Worgan, RJ Duncan, R Pharazyn; Maraekakaho includes Mason, Ormond, D[onald] McLean; the Aorangi block includes Oliver, Tuke, Domett and the Otaranga J Alexander and James Williams. The Aorangi Reserve is depicted in Maraetotora beside the 'old pa Native reserve'. Sketched roads and settlement areas are indicated around the port of Napier, Aorangi and east of the Ngaruroro River between Clive (Waipurehu) and Te Awanga. On the second smaller sheet, the Porangahau and Ruahine blocks include the settler names JN Northwood, D Gollan, KR Russell, TP Russell, Tully, Henton, A Grant, Ormond's, Wallaces, Herberts. Description: Comprises seven separate maps from the McLean papers that have been copied onto one map, traced by J D H Buchanan in 1948. They are 1 - Shows the placenames of the provincial district of Hawkes Bay; 2 - Maori land claims along the Mohaka River; 3 - the new 1851 boundary of the Waipawa River and the Mangaonuku Stream; 4 a rough sketch of the government purchase at Okawa ; 5 - map showing the Te Whare o te Pounamu in between the Pakiaka bush and Whakatu and Pakowhai; 6 - sketch of Tautane District showing quarantine ground for stock and Esdale's property; 7 - plan of Ngatarawa no. 1. Description: Sketchmaps of land near Ormondville, southern Hawkes Bay, depicting part of the boundary of the Eparaima Maori Reserve, the Tauraekaetai, the Hua Tukituki and the Ohinehua Streams, a road, bush, and fern hills. The first is a sketch of 'Paul's Native (Maori) reserve', which runs from Ormondville, over grass flats, between the Tauraekaetai and Ohinehua Streams, and includes bush on both sides of the Hua Tukituki stream, to a vertical boundary point. Across the boundary is bush designated for 'white people'. On the second map of the same area, entitled 'Reserve as it w[oul]d be available for white people', the boundary is horizontal and located two-thirds along the Tauraekaetai Stream. The area above the boundary is marked 'all good bush'; the area below is marked 'good bush available for white people'. Both maps indiciate the Eparaima Maori Reserve, beside the Tauraekaetai Stream and the road. Traced by GDH Buchanan. Quantity: 2 manuscript map(s) on single sheet.
