[Brees, Samuel Charles] 1810-1865 :Cape Palliser [looking] towards the Wairarapa. 1844

Date: 1844

By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865; Webb, Esther M, active 1938-1957

Reference: B-031-027

Description: A Pakeha male and two Maori walking on a rocky beach with cliffs and low scrub to their right, looking towards Palliser Bay and Wellington in the distance. Both Maori are in cloaks and are carrying taiaha. This work was given the title Turakirae Head by Library staff, possibly in the 1950s, 60s or early 1970s. Close inspection in January 1996 revealed a previously unnoticed title. Cape Palliser is a considerable distance from Turakirae Head, although along the same stretch of coastline. Modern photographs confirm that the site is Cape Palliser, and that the topography as recorded by Brees is accurate. The only modern change is a (probably man-made) pool half-way between the high tide mark and the cliffs. A copy of modern photographs of the same scene is with the watercolour. On verso: section of a manuscript map of Pauatahanui and Porirua Harbour, presumably by Brees. Pauatahanui is called Pawai Tang[inui? - paper trimmed]. Other Titles - Turakirae Head, Palliser Bay coast ca 1843 Inscriptions: Recto - lower centre over a sandy patch between the foreground rock outcrop and the closest Maori and rocks; in brushpoint and very faint and illegible in parts: Cape Palliser towards the Wairarapa. 1844. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour & gum arabic 173 x 372 mm

[Brees, Samuel Charles] 1810-1865 :Makaenuku Pa, district of the Hutt 1845? [Drawn by S...

Date: 1847

By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865; Melville, Henry, 1792-1870

Reference: E-070-007

Description: Red-coated soldiers (probably from the 58th Regiment) in the foreground, groups of Maori men and women, canoes drawn up on the shore of the Hutt River, the palisades of the pa in the background, with tall trees beyond. Several Maori are carrying bundles on their backs, possibly of potatoes, since Brees mentions "extensive potato grounds" around the pa in his text on p.30 of Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. In: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand Plate 18, No 54; also reproduced in Brees' Guide and description of the panorama of New Zealand (London, 1849) Date of original is likely to be 1845, since the soldiers shown did not occupy the Hutt Valley until 1845. The pa was located on the east bank of the river close to the site of the present Melling Bridge. Brees mentions that Makaenuku Pa was built by Porirua Maori after 1840. Other Titles - Makahinuku Pa Extended Title - From: Brees, S.C. Guide and description of the panorama of New Zealand ... (London, 1849) Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). [Brees, Samuel Charles] 1810-1865 :The great Wairarapa district & lake [Drawn by S C Br...

Date: 1847

By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865; Melville, Henry, 1792-1870

Reference: E-070-008

Description: Shows lake in distance; party hunting wild pig in foreground with dogs, worrying the pig. The party includes a Maori man dressed in traditional costume. In: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. Plate 4, No 10, text p. 9. Brees stresses the value of the flat land in this area, its quality for farming and the building of part of a road across the Rimutaka Range. Brees spent some time in the Wairarapa surveying until the New Zealand Company suspended its operations in 1844, so the engraving is presumably based on a drawing completed between 1842 (Brees' year of arrival in New Zealand) and 1844. Extended Title - From: Brees, S.C. Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847) Plate 4, no 10. Also from: Brees' Guide and description of the panorama of New Zealand (London, 1849) Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Engraving, hand-coloured 90 x 188 mm

[Brees, Samuel Charles] 1810-1865 :[Group of Maori and Pakeha near a beach, probably Pa...

Date: 1842 - 1845

By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865; Webb, Jessie H, active 1935-1947

Reference: B-031-004

Description: Sea to the right, with a beach, with two women and a man on horseback. Low bushes in the centre right foreground, in the centre a Maori man in a flax cloak pointing twoards the sea and in conversation with a Pakeha man; two Maori walking away in a red and a black cloak; another man, apparently aiming a slingshot; and two other Maori figures, seated on the ground. Beyond the figures is an undulating plain, probably sandhills. In the distance are several ranks of higher hills. Identification of the location suggested by the strong similarity of the line of hills in the background to those depicted in B-031-030, which Brees has titled Mana Pokerua [i.e. Mana Island and Pukerua] Other Titles - Pokarua Mana Pukerua Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - POKARUA. MANA. [Conjectured title. Only the PO then the M are visible] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 178 x 343 mm
