Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1880s by various photographers including James Bragge and Josiah Martin. Photographs of the Manawatu Gorge were taken by James Bragge, some of which show the horse and carriage in which Bragge carried his equipment. There is one photograph of English explorer and adventurer Captain Speedy who spent many years in Abyssinia and other parts of Africa, and who came to New Zealand in 1864, where he fought with the Waikato Militia before returning overseas. He is shown wearing Abyssinian costume (p 15). Includes one photograph of a painting of Wellington waterfront from 1841, by Charles Heaphy. Only a few images identify the photographers, the Burton Brothers, Tyree Brothers and James Bragge. The Bragge photograph (looking down to the Harbour from Hill Street taken in the 1880s) was identified from his horse-drawn carriage with his name and occupation emblazoned on the side. Description: Three photographic prints of images taken in Wellington by photographer James Bragge between circa 1860 and circa 1902. A wide view overlooking Thorndon, Wellington City, taken from The Terrace circa 1870. It shows the city buildings, including St Mary's Cathedral, Government House, Old St Pauls's Church, domestic houses, and early reclaimation work on the harbour's edge. On extreme lower right of frame, two women walking on a path are visible. A view taken of four men posing on Swinburne's Wharf, Wellington. Visible in the background are wooden buildings on the shoreline and some moored sailing vessels at the wharves. Print is captioned "Swinbourne Wharf Willis St". A view of colonial wooden buildings lining Lambton Quay, with a horse and cart on the Quay beside the shoreline. In the foreground is a pile of planks; and to left of frame is a large wooden building. Print is captioned "Lambton Quay showing back of the Central Club". Also includes a card matt with an embossed photographers stamp pasted on to it reading "James Bragge Portrait & Landscape Photographer Wellington N Z". No further provenance information known. Processing information: The prints came to the Library with card mounts which were a later addition to the prints. One card mount was retained as it has the photographer's stamp attached. The other mounts were discarded as they were not of an archival housing standard.

Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1870s to 1880s, many by unidentified photographers, with several being taken by James Bragge. One that is clearly by Bragge shows his named carriage "J. Bragge. Photographer. Lambton Quay, Wellington" in a photograph taken on the road on the Featherston side of the Rimutaka Hill (on page 18). The first fourteen pages show views of the Pink and White Terraces, each from varying angles. These are followed by views of Ohinemutu. Many of the photographs are unidentified, including one of a meeting house with a group of Maori men, women and children in front. Painted on the maihi are the words "Mauimua Mauiroto Maui", painted fish and Maui in a boat fishing. On page 26 is a photograph of a painting, possibly by Charles Blomfield, showing Lake Rotomahana with the Pink Terraces on the right and the top of the White Terraces in the foreground, beside which there are two men. Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River.
