Description: Shows a red-cloaked figure with a spear making a speech to a seated circle of armed and cloaked men, before a large-trunked tree in bush. At right a shallow cliff drops to a beach with 6 canoes drawn up, and seven figures standing beside them. In the right distance are three sailboats, and on the horizon, part of an island or headland. Previously attributed at different times to Charles Blomfield (according to Graham Chote of International Art Centre, Parnell), and to Nicholas Chevalier. Inscriptions: Unsigned and undated. Quantity: 1 oil(s) on canvas stretched on board.. Physical Description: Oil on canvas on board, 180 x 305 mm. Provenance: Bought with another small oil by the same hand (G-230-2), by Dr Neville Hogg, Dargaville, at International Art Centre, Auckland, 1976. Sold at Peter Webb's auction, Auckland 12 August 1993, lot 226 to John Crowder.

Description: An extensive view across the lake, with steam vents in the foreground and above the Pink Terraces in the middle distance. Small islands can be seen in the lake. The view is taken at sunrise or sunset. Mount Tarawera is in the background, to the left The view, dated 1894, records the appearance of the Pink Terraces and the Lake before the eruption of Mount Tarawera on 10 June 1886. Reproduced as a Turnbull Library Print in 1985, one of three oils of the Pink and White Terraces by Blomfield. Description: A river valley and clearing in native bush, with tree ferns in the foreground, the elevated rock formation of Castle Rock in the background. There are logs by the river and some cleared, some bush-clad hills, suggesting the beginnings of forest clearance The second Blomfield oil purchased from Cordy's as a pair to this oil, dated 1878, and showing a distinctive rock formation, was sold as being a Coromandel scene like this one. Description: This scene may or may not be in New Zealand. Shows hanging glacial valley with waterfall at right. In the left foreground are two dead trees, one lying down, with two native figures beside it. The trees may be North American rather than Pacific. Previously attributed at different times to Charles Blomfield (according to Graham Chote of International Art Centre Parnell), and to Nicholas Chevalier. Inscriptions: Unsigned and undated. Description: Shows a rural scene of a mill building beside a stream, with bush-covered hills in the background. In the centre foreground stands a man in a red shirt carrying a pitchfork, with his dog beside him. A group of cattle graze in the field at the right. The locality may be at Mander's mill at Awitu, begun around 1881 (the picture is dated 1880). Because of the date of the work, the location is uncertain. Mander had mills at Awitu (Awhitu?) from about 1881, and a few years later at Pukekararo (in partnership with Samuel Bradley). In 1895 the partners erected another mill/other mills at Nihotapu and Worsley's Bush in the Waitakere Ranges, both very steep and heavily-forested areas and not a match for the terrain shown in this view. Description: A pre-eruption view of Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) shows the Maori village of Kaiteriria. In the left foreground a group of Maori is seated on the ground beside a raised storehouse (pataka), with several other pataka and whare further away. There is a stake fence between the pataka and the whare, as well as another pataka on the headland reaching away into the lake. Three figures sit in a waka with a small rectangular sail at lower right. The island or headland at the far right has a flat top which may be a pa site. Description: Shows a group of industrial buildings with a smoking chimney, on the bend of a river. Beside the mill, there is a wharf with a red-funnelled steamship moored beside it, and another boat pulling two barges makes its way across the stretch of river in the foreground. The view is framed with native bush, and there are hills in the distance. The location is thought to be the Wairoa River that flows into the Kaipara Harbour, and if so, the steamship is likely to belong to the Northern Steamship Company. Blomfield painted widely, but did paint in the Far North, and there were several mills in the area, including the Aoroa Mill. Description: Shows a general view of Whakarewarewa village, probably from sketches made in 1885 and 1886. Shows an arched bridge over the foreground stream, a small hut beside the bridge and about two dozen larger huts and whare. There are numerous steaming vents in the ground. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - C Blomfield 1888 Blomfield visited and sketched in the area in 1875, 1885-1886; see notes in Dunbar Sloane auction catalogue for 29 August 2001, page 22. Physical Description: Oil on canvas, 900 x 492 mm (sight) Provenance: Previously listed with the International Art Centre, Auckland, in 1975 and 1976 This may have been one of the works mentioned in Blomfield's Pictures Sales Record Book in the Auckland Museum, where it is said that a Blomfield oil painting of Whakarewarewa sold on 12 April 1888 (measuring 12" x 36") to an Australian collector W R Wilson of Chetwynd, Melbourne; while another version was sold in London in 1888.
