Description: Photograph album of views of Wellington, ranging from copies of early paintings from the 1840s, and early photographs up to the 1870s, to a series of postcards from the 1920s. Most of the early images have clear descriptions, giving year made, location, and in some cases further information about buildings that can be seen. For example, one view shows Kebble's house, now the site of the Grand Opera House. Views in the postcards are identified, but no dates are given. Most of the postcard views were taken by Sydney Charles Smith Inscriptions: Album page - `To E.S.K. with all good wishes for the 8th Nov. 1925, from a wellwisher' (illuminated inscription inside front cover) Quantity: 1 album(s). Description: Postcards of New Zealand scenes, particularly in the Wellington and Rotorua districts and a few in Oamaru. Also a portrait of an unidentified soldier - a captain of the NZ Artillery, possibly World War I. Images are taken circa 1900-1929. Some photographers are identified: Sydney Charles Smith, Frederick George Radcliffe, Frank Giles Barker, and Robert George Stanley Marsh. Publishing companies include Tanner Bros Ltd, Frank Duncan & Co, and Fleetway Press. Scenes feature landmarks in Wellington and Oamaru, various geothermal scenes at Whakarewarewa, and scenes of Maori life and customs. Also includes single images of harvesting lucerne at Marlborough, Riddiford Gardens, and an unidentified geyser [Waimangu?]. Description: Photographs taken between 1925 and 1927 depicting the ashphalting of roads in the Wellington region. Includes photographs taken for the Wellington City Council by Frank Giles Barker. Inserted in a pocket inside the back cover there are three loose photographs showing the Hutt Road alongside Wellington Harbour. Photographs of the Hutt Road include those alongside the harbour, and also some of the "Main Hutt Road" in Lower and Upper Hutt. Most of the photographs have good captions, with the title at the head of each one which reads "Asphaltic concrete pavement". Other - Some of the original negatives, from which these photographs were printed, are amongst the Wellington City Council collection at PAColl-5448.
