Description: Shows a view looking across bracken, to the back of the first Government House (built 1842, burnt 1848), with the Waitemata and North Head in the background. There is a sailing ship in the right distance, and a waka with two triangular sails on the harbour. Two Maori sit in the bracken, and their is a goat grazing in the left foreground. In the right centre background is a raised storehouse (?), and there is a clump of flax in the right foreground. The hill above Devonport has a flagstaff. Inscriptions: Mat recto - beneath image - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Sepia wash, on paper, 85 x 153 mm. Provenance: Part of Mrs Hobson's album. The album was passed by Eliza Hobson to her daughter, Eliza, Lady Rendel.

Description: Shows the Rev. B. Y. Ashwell's first Mission Station, at Pepepe or Taupiri, located beside the Waikato River. There are high, bush-clad hills behind the house which has a fenced garden. A canoe is close to the station on the river. There is a cabbage tree in the right foreground. In the upper left portion of the view is A-208-003 "Architecture New Zealandic" a sepia sketch of the front and interior of a Maori wharenui or meeting house. Description: Four canoes pulled up on a beach, one shown with a figurehead and with three Maori men seated in it. To the left are two small cottages, one of raupo, the other with a window, front door and bench outside, on which a man is seated. Both cottages have chimneys. The house is two-storied, wooden, with a double gable and has a small outhouse, possibly the privy, at the end of a high surrounding wooden fence. Description: Auckland City from the hills behind the city, with a flax bush to the right and three Maori viewing the scene from the fern on the left. A stream in the middle ground (now the site of Queen Street) leads down to the town with Government House shown in the fenced area in the centre right and St Paul's Church silhouetted against Mt Victoria across the harbour. The cluster of buildings closest to the viewer at the lowest point in the valley is the Queen Street gaol, excavated in 1987 (see TL13/14/1 8/3/91). Rangitoto is shown in the background and there are several ships in the harbour. The scene is shown at sunset. At the National Library Gallery, 27 April - 29 July 2001. A preliminary pencil drawing for this watercolour is held at A-208-018. The title of the watercolour is taken from the title of the pencil drawing, which shows St Paul's without its tower, although a tentative tower is lightly sketched in. The drawing would be likely to have been executed during 1843 and no later than January 1844, when Ashworth departed New Zealand for Hong Kong. The watercolour may have been completed while Ashworth was in New Zealand, with the putative tower added; or he may have worked from his pencil sketch at a slightly later date. Several of the sketches in the Hobson album were completed after Mrs Hobson left New Zealand in 1843. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Transfers: Originally part of Mrs Hobson's album (E-216-f).. Processing information: One of several pages removed from the Hobson album for conservation reasons, 1990. This page was too large for the album and was becoming damaged around the edges. It was formerly located on p. 107 of the album.

Description: A panoramic view of the waterfront at Russell (Kororareka) with houses, shops, churches, etc clearly outlined. Pompalier House is in the centre of the right-hand section, above the beachline, with its garden in front of it, sloping down the hill. The American flag is flying towards the centre of the right-hand side, by the home of the American Consul.
