There are fenced boundaries in the foreground, and areas of pine plantations dotted through the scene. There is one house nestled among trees in the middle distance to the right. Description: Shows a view of the head of the Waikato River, looking south across Lake Taupo to Mounts Tongaririo, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu in the distance. On the right bank, in the foreground, is a Maori pa, with a pataka or food store shown most prominently. Both banks of the river are densely covered in trees, including pine and cabbage trees, and bush. A canoe or waka with six occupants glides away from the pa across the river. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - J S Alington 20.1.24; Verso - top left - Copied from a black and white picture.
