[Warre, Henry James?], 1818-1898 :Brookside; the residence of Major Matson. [1850s?]

Date: 1850 - 1860

By: Warre, Henry James, 1819-1898

Reference: B-061-006

Description: Shows a view of Parnell from the Parnell entrance to the Auckland Domain. Brookside, the home of Major Matson, stands on the corner of Birdwood Crescent and Parnell Road. Rangitoto Island is in the far left distance. Unsigned; attributed to Henry James Warre on stylistic grounds, particularly in the treatment of the foreground. The background perspective may be treated in a more primitive way. Another artist who was a neighbour of Matson was Colonel Robert Henry Wynyard, but the resemblance to his style is not marked. Notes on the backing board indicate that Major Matson died in 1898, but this conflicts with the date of Major Henry Matson's death in 1867. The undeveloped nature of the surroundings in the painting argues against this house being one belonging to a younger generation. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 287 x 450 mm.
