[Smith, William Mein] 1799-1869 :Sketch on the Manawatu River. Long Reach. North Island...

Date: 1841 - 1867

From: Speer, William Henry d 1867 :[Speer album] 1860-1867

By: Smith, William Mein, 1799-1869

Reference: E-395-015

Description: A view along the Manawatu River looking towards hills, with a cabbage tree on the left, flax and other bushes and trees on the right. Possibly drawn as early as 1841. The work is very similar in style to Mein Smith's work in the 1840s and he drew the Manawatu River in September 1841 for the New Zealand Company (C-011-002). Although Speer, (the compiler of the album in which this drawing is located), was not in New Zealand until the 1860s, Smith could have given him an earlier drawing. Unsigned. Attributed on stylistic grounds. There is a rough drawing of a fence and the inscription, probably in Speer's hand on the verso: "Long Reach" River "Manawatu" Province of Wellington "New Zealand". Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Sketch on the Manawatu, Long Reach [in the hand of W. M. Smith]; North Island, N. Z. [in the hand of William Speer]. On the verso is a further hand-written title 'Long Reach' River 'Manawatu' - Province of Wellington 'New Zealand' [in the hand of William Speer] with a rough drawing of fence-posts Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Blue and brown ink on paper, 125 x 216 mm
