Description: View from across the Waikato River towards the main buildings of the Maori king's residence. The long low building on the left is the 'General's quarters', the 'King's palace' is in the centre with dark red barge boards, the 'council chambers' are futher to the right and the closest building and the flagstaff is on the far right. There are two small canoes at the landing place, along with people and horses. Description: A standing armed soldier and two seated Maori in the centre foreground, looking towards Te Awamutu township. A fort is enclosed within a fence on the right, and the church on the left is surrounded by other buildings with puffs of smoke, either from fires or shot. Description: View along the shoreline looking east, towards Parnell, with the military buildings the skyline above the cliff. Sail boats in the harbour, and a wharf in the right foreground with a yacht, crewed by several men. Other men and a woman with two children are on the wharf. This watercolour is copied from one by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams: either 'Fort Britomart, Auckland, 3 August 1864' in the Hocken Library, p. 35 in the now dismantled Williams' sketchbook, with minor changes in some details, especially the lettering on the sail of the yacht; or the Turnbull's watercolour 'Fort Britomart from Queen Street Wharf August 64' (E-510-010/011), which varies the figures on the wharf and does not include lettering on the yacht's sail. Sail boats in the harbour, a steamship moored on the far left and a Maori canoe in the foreground, with a man carrying a load (possibly fish) on his shoulder. This watercolour is copied from one by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams: 'Auckland, New Zealand, 3 August 1864' (Reference number B-032-021). Description: A copy of a watercolour by Charles Decimus Barraud [Lake Papaitonga] (B-004-030), showing a Māori settlement with a long European-style raupo whare, Māori seated in front of the dwelling, and round a cooking pot over a fire, a dog, hens and two pigs, with a small canoe on the lake, and fish hanging to dry. A European man is talking to one group. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997.
