Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: Album of tourist views of New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic Islands, chiefly taken by John Richard Morris, Jnr, circa 1890s. Places and subjects listed above where identified. The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. The wharf is crowded with people seeing the ship off, soldiers lined up alongside the ship, and bunting flying on two ships nearby. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Album created by G E Mannering, some photographs taken by him. A number of these are of children, only identified by nick-names, or Christian names; and one of an older man in a top hat is named `Grandad'. Several views of the children are taken at the beach at New Brighton in 1893. An interior photograph of an office `The consulting desk' was taken by `HMP'. Photographs also include a scene of hay making, and several of scenes relating to sheep farming, including sheep drafting, and one of 120 bales of wool from `Double Hill Estate' loaded onto four wagons, towed by W.A. McLaren's traction engine. Other scenes in Christchurch include the Christchurch Cathedral; and early photographs of Christ's College, when the buildings were in `corrugated iron Tudor' style; and a house with a century plant (agave americana) in the foreground. The rest of the scenes are mixed, with a few tourist scenes of Maori outside a meeting house, and a group in a hot spring at Tokaanu, and a newspaper cutting with photograph of Rewi Maniapoto from the Christchurch Press (no date). Images are almost exclusively of the exterior of buildings with only the interiors of woolsheds seen. Many images include the families that lived in the houses and often their dogs. Farm workers are seen in some images. Farm animals pictured include sheep, horses, mules, farm dogs, and oxen. Activities such as shearing with a Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine, wool sorting, wool scouring, wool transportation (horse drawn carts and ox wagons), sheep dipping, and sheep drafting are shown.
