Description: Lantern slides made by New Zealand Government Tourist Department showing scenes of Frankton, Queenstown; early Auckland; a paddle steamer probably on the Whanganui River; view of Port Chalmers; a crowd having a picnic on a beach with a girls' running race in progress; the cathedral, Christchurch; a man viewing geothermal activity; and a party of men climbing a glacier. Description: Album of views compiled by Alexander Fisher, MD RN, during his service as a surgeon aboard HMS Endymion. The album comprises: Photographs collected during the cruise of the Flying Squadron, under the command of Rear Admiral G T Phipps Hornby, during 1869-1870, which carried HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. Included are views of Plymouth, Portsea, Madeira, Brazil (Bahia and Rio de Janiero), South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Japan, British Columbia, Hawaii and Chile. Photographs collected during a cruise in the Mediterranean during the 1870s, including views of Malta, Syria, Jerusalem, Venice, Egypt (Alexandria, Cairo, Pyramids, the Sphinx), Gibraltar and Seville Photographers represented include William Thomas Locke Travers (1819-1903), James Bragge (1833?-1908), Felice A Beato (1825-1908?). Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900), was captain of HMS Galatea and commander of the Flying Squadron, which visited New Zealand in 1869 and 1870.
