Description: A large Maori pa in the foreground, with wharenui, other houses and a pataka. People seated by a cooking fire on the left and in the entrance to the wharenui. Flax, toetoe, cabbage trees and other bush in an around the pa. Description: Shows blockhouse in distance atop a small hill. In the foreground, in front of small cliffs on the shoreline, is a stretch of water, a canoe, and three figures, possibly spear fishing. The title includes "Manukau Hrbour". The Whau River arises north of the Manukau Harbour, and flows into the Waitemata Harbour at Avondale. Nevertheless this view could have been taken from Manukau Harbour looking north to a blockhouse built near the source of the Whau, rather than at its mouth on the Waitemata. Description: Shows a view of the Wairoa River from just above the river bank. A young boy can be seen on the bank, wearing a hat, possibly line fishing or throwing stones into the river. Willow trees and bush feature on either side of the foreground. A number of huts or whare can be seen on the opposite bank. A yacht can be seen in the distance, and in the middle distance is a canoe or waka with a single occupant. The clouds have a distinctive pink glow to them, which is reflected on the water.
