Description: Sketch shows a waterfall. At the right is the water-race that took the water from the dam to the mill wheel (at Kahore Mill). Mr G Springer has identified the water-race at the right. It is now the path to the old dam site. The remains of the water wheel at Kahore mill were still there in 1996. Quantity: 1 drawing(s) in sketchbook.. Description: Shows a large kainga on the bank of a river flowing between wooded hills. There is a canoe on the river at lower left. Probably shows Pipiriki. Compare the church in the background with the one shown in a drawing of Pipiriki by Samuel Parkes (E-273-q-020) in another album of Richard Taylor's Attributed to Merrett on stylistic grounds. Merrett was in the Taranaki / Whanganui area in the early 1850s The church shown here was build of rammed earth (pise) in about 1851. Other Titles - Hamaria. Namaria Inscriptions: No inscriptions on the item or the album page. The sketchbook's original listing of the contents names this view as Hamaria, 21 January 1852. The source of this information is not known. 'Hamaria' is a transliteration in Maori of the Biblical place name Samaria. There was once a small settlement called Hamaria above Pipiriki, on the Maunganuioteao river. It had no church, unlike Pipiriki Quantity: 1 drawing(s) in sketchbook..
