Description: Coastal profiles of Cape Foulwind (near Westport, West Coast, South Island) and its surrounding landscape in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. This was the first area of New Zealand seen by Tasman. Each profile has a lengthy inscription in Dutch below it. Dutch title is translated into English. Further translation of lower inscription reads: Thus appears the Staten Landt to south of the rocky point when you sail along the coast and views of rocky point which appear thus as you can see here below. Description: Te Puni standing, with full facial moko, clad in a dogskin cloak and holding a taiaha in his right hand. Behind him is Wellington Harbour with two Maori by the shore to the left, and Petone Pa, a canoe and a flagpole with the New Zealand Company flag on the right. The western Hutt hills are in the background. Accompanying text reads: These two chiefs sold the site of the present Wellington Settlement to Colonel Wakefield, the Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company, in September 1839... Epuni is the uncle of Warepori. Under the same unfavourable circumstances as his nephew, he has nobly deserved the name of "a true gentleman." He still lives at the village of Pitone, loved and respected by the English inhabitants of all ranks. These portraits were drawn at the time of the purchase in 1839... the village of Pitone and the flag-staff at the foot of which Colonel Wakefield took formal possession, appear in the back-ground.
