Description: Seated portrait of Kawakawa (Bay of Islands) chief Rangituke, his wife leaning on his shoulder, his son seated at his feet, viewed, according to the artist, 'from the window of my hut at the Bay of Islands' (Russell or Kawakawa?). A carved storehouse is in the right background and a whare and storage platform on the left, with the sea beyond. According to Earle 'it illustrates the general attachment of the natives of New Zealand to their wives and children'. Description: An extensive view of the Wairarapa Plain with Wairarapa Lake on the left, Rimutaka Range and Tararua Ranges in the background. A boar hunt is underway in the foreground, with one Maori man and a dog to the right. The Maori man is dressed in traditional costume, and appears to be carrying a rope. Bracken and ferns in the foreground and clumps of bush on the plain. The accompanying text reads: This district lies about fifty miles from Wellington by the nearest road. Mr Charles Kettle, one of the Company's Assistant-Surveyors, ascended the Manawatu River, which flows along the other side of the Tararua Mountains, and entered this plain by rounding the low spurs at the extreme right of the view. The forest consists of the largest trees. The open tracts are covered with grass, feern and tutu bushes. Wild hogs abound in this plain. The Ruamahanga flows through the midst of it, and passes through Lake Wairarapa into Palliser Bay. The plain of the Ruamahanga is about sixty miles in length, with an average breadth of twelve miles. There is one small native village at its northern extremity, and another on the beach at Palliser Bay, as well as a whaling station supplied from Wellington. Lake Wairarapa is ten miles long, and from two to three miles broad. Between the lake and the sea several settlers from Wellington have recently squatted with large herds of cattle, which they drove along the sea-coast. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: A Maori chief standing in a beached canoe, addressing a crowd of warriors, mostly seated, with a few standing. Two other long canoes are on the beach, one with a sail is in the water, and others are pulled up close to a pa or kainga in the left background. A dog sniffs the ground in the foreground. Most men are armed with guns, although one on the far right holds a taiaha. A gourd and flax kit are centrally placed amongst one group of men. Earle's text reads: "A party of warriors had collected at the Bay of Islands for the purpose of making a hostile visit to a tribe on the banks of the Thames. They were detained by contrary winds; and for several days were constantly engaged in listening to speeches from their chiefs, who addressed them from a canoe hauled on shore ... one [canoe], which I measured, was 70 feet long, and carried one hundred fighting men." A single figure, Rangihaeata, is standing centrally, addressing Sir George Grey, who is seated in a chair close to Rangihaeata. The incident took place at Waikanae in 1851. Description: Two images on one page. The upper image shows a group of Maori children on a swing or moari, a tall pole with ropes attached from its top, flying out over a bank, watched by a group of seated adults and children. The palisades of a pa are in the right background and a low hill in the distance. The lower view shows a haka, with naked men in the act of raising oars, watched by other Maori. Canoes are drawn up at the edge of Lake Rotorua and the palisades of Ohinemutu Pa and its higher buildings can be seen behind the men. Both drawings are copied from the work of Joseph Jenner Merrett, without acknowledgement. See the Library's Hobson Album for Merrett's drawing 'A native game' showing the swing. (E-216-017). This was drawn before 1843. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. Similarly, in the Hobson Album, also by Merrett is 'The pah of Oinamutu on the Rotorua Lake', which provides the background Angas has used for War Dance. Description: Shows a double portrait of the chief standing, and his wife seated beside him in the ground. Mungakahu holds a hani (staff with a carved head and tongue), ornamented with parrot's feathers and pieces of dog skin, in his right hand, and is dressed in a black and yellow checked kakahu (flax cloak) with a blanket underneath it. He has facial moko. Ko Mari wears a feather earring in her left ear, has a moko on her chin, and wears a tiki and a woven cloak. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844 Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Te Moanaroa (also known as Te Amoahanga and Amoanaroa) of Waingaroa or Raglan Harbour, standing on the left, dressed in a fringed cloak with tassels and pompoms of wool. On the right, squats Te Awaitaia or William Naylor, dressed in a kiwi feather and flax cloak. Behind them are the palisades of a pa and the raupo roof of a building. Both men are described as chiefs of Waikato and both are converts to Christianity associated with Rev. Robert Maunsell at Waikato Heads. Description: A seated Maori couple with a background of a carved whare. The man, To Ngaporutu has a moko and is wearing a greenstone earring and a flax leaf rain cloak. His wife, seated on his right, is in a woven flax korowai cloak and has an albatross feather ear adornment. She has a chin moko and crosses marked on her cheek and forehead. The pair were residents of the Waitomo area, with Rihe coming from the Wanganui area. Both were recent converts to Christianity. On the right side, another seated man and woman, of Waikato, ther man "Ngawhea" from the Kawhia area had not been converted to Christianity; the woman, Nga Miho was a 'celebrated priestess, and wife of Rangitautaea, the old chief of Ahuahu, who was wounded at Taranaki'. The woman is wearing a blanket, the man a flax rain cloak. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. According to Angas's text, Nga Miho means 'the teeth'. However the usual Maori word for teeth is niho. Description: The cartoon shows Wiremu Kingi Tarapipi Te Waharoa (Wiremu Thompson after baptism) saying to a Maori chief that 'The general (Carey) is in disgrace you say, and the queen's troops are to be sent away, and the volunteers and rangers are coming against us. Then, Kingi, (Wi Kingi te Rangitake?) the sooner we surrender the better'. To the right in the background is a ship at sea and troops are marching towards it, overseen by Brigadier-General Carey on horseback. A group of volunteer Pakeha troops are marching up from the middle distance on the right. The Cartoon shows the moment when Wiremu Tamehana decides that the Maori must surrender. In 1860 Wiremu Thompson travelled to Taranaki in the roles of negotiator and mediator between Maori and Pakeha. Later, when war broke out in the Waikato, he again acted as peacemaker, but his attempts were not completely appreciated by Pakeha leaders of the time. The drawing is possibly the work of G. F. von Tempsky. The seated woman in the centre is strongly reminiscent of his work, and he is known to have drawn illustrations for 'Punch, or the Wellington Charivari' in the mid-1860s. Description: Shows part of the outer palisade of the Ngati Toa pa "Taupo" on the mainland at present day Plimmerton. The island of Mana is in the centre distance. In the foreground are canoes belonging to Ngati Toa and there are flax bushes growing in the left foreground. A figure in a striped blanket sits in the left foreground. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. The Ngati Toa pa "Taupo" was probably built and occupied before the Wairau Affair of 1843, where a number of Ngati Toa and Europeans (armed constabulary) were killed in an armed encounter. However, it was'nt until after that incident that large numbers of Ngati Toa returned from the South Island for fear of reprisal attacks from settlers to re-populate the Wellington-Porirua-Kapiti disricts in large numbers again. This pa is mainly associated with Te Hiko-o-te-Rangi, a paramount chief of Ngati Toa, and his uncle Te Rauparaha. Other Titles - Taupo Pa Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Profile portraits at the top of the image of "Native of King George Sound" (an Aboriginal) and of "New Zealander" (A Maori man), and, in the lower section, a seated group portrait after Augustus Earle's portrait of Te Rangituke of the Bay of Islands, with his wife and son.
