Description: Album of publicity photographs, and photographs of posters and advertisements taken by unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. Many of the images in this album were taken for a series of articles written by Oliver Neal Gillespie between January 1939 and June 1940, published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine. The series was entitled "Buy New Zealand goods and build New Zealand. New Zealand Industries Series". These contribute the largest group of images in the album, covering a wide range of industries. They include men's and women's clothing manufacturers; electrical engineering companies such as Pallo Engineering (petrol pumps), National Engineering (Neeco electric ovens), Standard Engineering Company; tobacco factories; potteries; Nugget shoe polish factory; brushware factories; and companies associated with the manufacture of food products (eg Watties canneries, Edmonds Baking Powder, Griffins and Bycrofts biscuit makers, and Whittome & Stevenson sauce and pickle makers. There are other sequences of images, including newly built state housing in Lower Hutt, with some houses still under construction beside the Hutt River, a streetscape, and a children's playground (p 7-8); a large crowd joining in a send-off of R.S.A. men to Australia in April 1938; a train laden with boxes of oranges from Rarotonga, the "Special orange train from Auckland"; and photographs of charts showing the progress of the New Zealand Government Railways, with railways workshops staff organisation charts (for Otahuhu, Addington, Hutt & Hillside Workshops (p 28-29). On p 35 there are views of a new hangar at Rongotai Aerodrome, under construction, then views of the completed exterior and the interior with a row of Blackburn B-5 Baffin bi-planes. Several images show collection of Railway sports trophies (including cups for their cricket teams), and two views of New Zealand Railways staff member Neil Edwards, a tennis champion who represented New Zealand in Britain in 1939. Description: Photographs of Kamo (Whangarei), Rodney County and Coromandel, taken, probably in the 1900s, by Daniel P Parker of Coromandel. Includes views of the construction on a timber dam (probably in Coromandel), Coromandel Public Hospital, Kennedy Bay (Coromandel), a stream crossing between Opitonui and Coromandel, bush camps in the Coromadel district and a traffic bridge in Rodney County. Daniel P Parker is recorded in the Wise's Post Office directories as an engineer in Coromandel from 1902 to 1930. Between 1906 and 1911 he is also recorded as a photographer. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. Description: Most of the photographs relate to the remedial treatment camp set up in Rotorua. On the first page, the photographs are flanked by newspaper cuttings about another camp set up for the same purpose at Papakura, Auckland. The photographs on this page may relate to the Papakura camp. Most of the photographs are of groups of men doing various forms of excersise, and playing sport. There are group photographs of men in military uniform and others of groups posing with tennis raquets and medicine balls. Other photographs record the launch of "Bonds for Bombers" campaign in Rotorua, March 1942, and the ANZAC parade 1942 (also Rotorua). There are seven original cartoon drawings of military personnel by Stenberg. These were used in the Rotorua camp's newspaper. The photographs are supported by many newspaper cuttings about the camps and their purpose. There is a photograph relating to the camp newspaper "The Arawa Guerilla" and two copies of the paper are pasted onto the same page. Other newspaper cuttings and two programmes relate to a very successful entertainment developed by the men in the Rotorua camp. This was "Splitzkreig Army Review" which from September 1942 to March 1943 toured the upper North Island and raised 2,000 pounds for the Patriotic Fund. Remedial treatment camps were set up for men who had been judged by the military medical authorities as unfit for military service, but whoes ailments were considered curable. Examples of the sorts of conditions treated are knee problems, flat feet, \"underdevelopment,\" nervous conditions, and chronic backache. The Rotorua camp occupied Arawa Park, and the racecourse.
