Searle album 2

Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Roland James Searle, circa 1930s. The first subject is the opening of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial (Cenotaph), and includes a programme of the dedication and handing over on Sunday 17th April, 1932 (p 001-012). That is followed by the consecration ceremony for the National War Memorial and War Memorial Carillon (again with a copy of the programme), held on Anzac Day, April 25th, 1932 (p 015-023). Pages 029-033 show the arrival of the Wellington Jubilee Dock in 1931, the floating dock which was towed from England by two Dutch tugboats. The next sequence is entitled "The Express pulls out - Thorndon", and follows the Express to Wanganui where views show a river-boat trip up the Whanganui River (p 037-056), and include a map of historical areas on the river compiled by Annabell & Marchant, surveyors of Wanganui (p 055). The train trip is continued in the next section, and includes an illustrated diagram of the Raurimu Spiral, then arrival at the new Beach Road Auckland Railway Station. Photographs of Auckland include the Auckland Institute and Museum, Auckland University, Grafton Bridge, a sailing ship at the wharves, and the Auckland Zoo. Further North there are scenes of ploughing, a mine entrance, rock formations at Waro, and the Taheke Falls; before travelling to Rotorua and the surrounding thermal regions. A number of images were taken at Whakarewarewa, including photos of Paul Thomas and his wife, along with scenes showing women washing clothes in hot pools, a woman with a baby on her back holding a rope with a food basket cooking in the pool, children in a hot pool, and men at work carving. Paul Thomas wrote to thank Searle for sending him copies of photographs (p 101, written on May 1st 1932). Later photographs again with the train often in view show timber felling and milling, and views of the Arapuni hydroelectic power station. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Railways album 1

Description: Photographs of large groups of people taken on tours run by New Zealand Railways, using rail and road transport. The album covers various trips taken by large groups of unidentified people, mostly in the North Island, and only as far south as Tokaanu and the Whanganui River. They travelled by rail, by road and by ferry. Very few of the photographs have captions, but several are labelled "Commerce trip", and include images of farming, ploughing, stock sales yards, and a large group of men picnicking around a hangi (p. 14). Travel in New Zealand

Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes a view of Lake Okataina with Mount Tarawera; the Waimangu thermal area including Frying Pan Lake, Gibraltar Rock, a small terrace, and the buried village at Te Wairoa; the Huka Falls; the hydro dam and village at Atiamuri; the dam lake at Maraetai; Karapiro dam; and Mount Pirongia. Slides on this sheet are numbered 377-407 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 381-382, 386-389, 391, 405) showing Gibraltar Rock at Waimangu, steaming cliffs at Lake Rotomahana, Mount Tarawera, launch on Lake Tarawera and the buried village at Te Wairoa. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes a view of the Pohutu Geyser; Lake Rotoiti; Okere Falls; a launch party on the lake; general view of the shores of Rotoiti; Moose Lodge, and a Maori house in the grounds; a carved post at Tikitere; group looking at hot pools, mud pools and the Champagne Pool at Tikitere; Lake Okataina landing stage and launch; Californian poppies on the shore; the site of an old Maori pa; and bush on the mountain sides of Lake Okataina. Slides on this sheet are numbered 352-376 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 352, 354, 356-357) showing a general view of the Whakarewarewa valley, Pohutu Geyser, and Guide Rangi. Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P. McLennan album

Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903.
