Photographer unknown: Wellington and district hotels and a tram accident

Description: 8 images of hotels including one of Porirua Hotel in the distance beyond a scattering of houses, a small church and a Shell station. Three are of a bad tram accident at the corner of Webb Street and Taranaki Street where a Thorndon tram went right through the premises adjacent to the Napier-Wellington Transport Co Ltd. Police and passers-by are looking on and workmen are trying to clear the debris. The last image is of what may be a nurses' hostel at Wellington Hospital. Photographer unidentified. Description: Recent prints from old photographs of Wellington, originallty taken between about 1841 and 1929. Includes one photograph of a painting of Wellington waterfront from 1841, by Charles Heaphy. Only a few images identify the photographers, the Burton Brothers, Tyree Brothers and James Bragge. The Bragge photograph (looking down to the Harbour from Hill Street taken in the 1880s) was identified from his horse-drawn carriage with his name and occupation emblazoned on the side. Description: Photographs taken between 1925 and 1927 depicting the ashphalting of roads in the Wellington region. Includes photographs taken for the Wellington City Council by Frank Giles Barker. Inserted in a pocket inside the back cover there are three loose photographs showing the Hutt Road alongside Wellington Harbour. Photographs of the Hutt Road include those alongside the harbour, and also some of the "Main Hutt Road" in Lower and Upper Hutt. Most of the photographs have good captions, with the title at the head of each one which reads "Asphaltic concrete pavement". Other - Some of the original negatives, from which these photographs were printed, are amongst the Wellington City Council collection at PAColl-5448. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903.
