Chatham Islands album

Description: Album chiefly shows members of a Lands & Survey team surveying boundaries etc, in the Chatham Islands, and in South Canterbury, circa 1938. Residents of the Chatham Islands, various locations in the islands and activities such as sheep transportation from the islands to Lyttelton and Wellington by ship are shown. Another sequence shows drainage and irrigation procedures in South Canterbury. The photographer is probably Russell Gladstone Dick, later the New Zealand Surveyor-General. Other - Source of descriptive information - Card inserted in album which reads "Ample evidence this is a 1938 Lands and Surveys team surveying boundaries etc ... Description: Photographs of Clarke, Graham and Fyfe who first climbed Mount Cook on Christmas Day 1894, with their mountaineering equipment; the sheep dog of James MacKenzie the sheep-stealer; a bullock team pulling wool bales; the Fairlie to Mount Cook coach with John Rutherford driving; the bridge over the river at Lake Tekapo with the hotel next to it; Mount Cook Station, originally built by A Burnett, with a thatched roof and the family outside it; a drawing of the ferry crossing Lake Pukaki and the original accommodation house on the shore; hay-making in front of the Balmoral homestead; the yard of Haldon station surrounded by trees showing the out-buildings and men with dogs; Levels homestead with a man with a hoe and others outside; and a group of men and women picnicking in front of two tents at Governor's Bush in Mount Cook township being the first party conveyed by the Mount Cook Motor Company ca 1880s. Description: A large collection of miscellaneous original and copy negatives mostly of Christchurch and the surrounding area. Some are studio portraits of family groups. The rest of the collection includes: a street scene in front of the old railway station; a cycling race; men rowing and canoeing; children playing in a swing park; a brass band playing on board a steamer; various beach scenes including donkey rides; train pulling into Kaiapoi station; a small bach; two girls next to a waterfall; trams and a cyclist going past the Jubliee Clock Tower; the front facade of St Paul's Presbyterian Church; three views of the old Public Hospital next to Hagley Park; the Chamber of Commerce building on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street; a copy negative of a carte de visite of a couple kissing; a monument incorporating a tiki on a tall pole and other maori carvings (location unknown); a man at the doorway of his shed with an array of gardening implements; two men pulling a covering back from a hangi pit; the cathedral with a number of trams in front; a tram advertising Ballantynes; a kitchen interior showing a range with kettles on top and a cupboard and dresser with crockery; six Maori on horseback possibly in a procession; a porter bringing a cart of luggage up to a train; five men giving friends piggy backs on the beach; sheep being driven past stock yards; the Avon River; a crowd outside the Avon Rowing Club; Wilson the maltman's horse and cart crossing a bridge; and two images of a harvest festival in a hall with a painted back drop and sheaves of corn arranged in front of it. Description: Photographs of a voyage to New Zealand taken by an unidentified photographer, between December 1912 and November 1913. The first group relate to the voyage, with scenes of shipboard life, including group portraits, harbours and ships they passed, and preparing `treats for 3rd class children'. The latter part of the album relates to the Waimate and Dunedin areas of the South Island. Many of the images are linked with farming, including scenes at `Kinbyran' (possibly Kyeburn?); Deacon's farm; Charley Cornelius and Paul Studholme on horseback; Paul Studholme's home (an arts and crafts style of bungalow); the home of Norton Francis (a stock and station agent in Waimate); `The Homestead' (or Te Waimate Homestead), one of the properties owned by members of the Studholme family; Hilboro (a house and views across paddocks); and a `meet' at Teschemaker's farm, with views of the house, the stables with horesemen and women gathering, and horsemen with beagles. There are three views of races at Dunedin Race-course; views of shark fishing on the beach near Waimate; the Johnson family and their house. Description: Photographs of the South Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1942 to 1956. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Identified people are mountaineers A C Clough, Ron Biggs, and Ken Hall; publican Jack Ritchie; journalist H J E (Bert) Kane; Mrs P Koerstens; and bushmen Doug Macalister and Ron (Tiki) Brimmicombe. There is an unidentified solider and some portraits of unidentified children. Featured natural environments include Tatere Gorge, Lake Haupiri and surrounding area, and the Otira Gorge. Contains prints of individual buildings as well as broader views of towns. A number of wooden buildings are in a state of decay, but houses, churches, and other buildings are still in use. Further images (and series of images) of note include: the transportation by boat of a tractor at Milford sound and a Land Rover to Jackson's Bay; workers at the Kopara Sawmill; industry at Mussel Point; and locomotives, boilers, dredges, and other machinery relating to mining.
