Description: Consists of 3 logs written by Mackay on the whaling ship Splendid for the years 1875-1877. The logs detail the voyages of the ship from Port Chalmers to various places around New Zealand, the Southern Ocean and into the Pacific. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid. Also includes Clem Koch's history of the Lutheran Church in New Zealand Source of title - Supplied Mads Christensen was sent to New Zealand by the Inner Mission Board of Denmark in 1886. He was ordained and inducted to the Mauriceville Parish in 1886; from 1893 he served in Palmerston North. Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand.
