Description: Original log book of an account of Jonas Eastwood Woodhouse of his journey from London, England to Southland, New Zealand on board the 'New Great Britain' in 1863. Also a typed transcript of the same. Woodhouse describes life on board the ship in detail, including the weather, food, entertainment, equator crossing celebrations, and deaths of other passengers. He also describes sailing past Solander and Steward [Stewart?] Islands and arriving in Southland where they were met by a pilot ship and assessed for quarantine. He gives his impressions of the bush, houses, gardens, animals, and pig hunting that he could see from the ship before they landed. Also includes a list of passengers on the ship, organised by county and country, and the words to 'Song of the New Great Britain' composed by Mr Robert Wotton - another passenger on the ship. Also includes letters addressed to Mr F R Woodhouse (a great grandson of Woodhouse and previous owner of the book) in relation to the log book (letters dated 1956, 1976, and 1981). Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: Letters and journal of Anne Catherine Wilson, edited by M G Armstrong, with appendices, list of mss and printed sources consulted, genealogical notes re Wilson and Hawker families, photographs (photocopies) of family members and residences. Photocopies of holograph letters of Anne to her husband, 1835-1838; and photocopy of Anne's shipboard diary for 1832. Anne Wilson was the wife of the missionary, John Alexander Wilson who was attached to the Church Missionary Society. The couple left England on board the `Camden', a convict vessel bound for NSW in 1932, and arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1833. Anne spent most of the next five years at the mission station at Puriri, near Thames, with other missionary wives involved in raising her children, school teaching and household chores. She was constantly separated from her husband who spent long periods travelling through troubled areas of Tauranga, Matamata and Roturua. Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand.
