Description: Bennett desribes his experiences travelling and surveying in Ireland (1838-1840); his voyage on the `Lady Clarke' to Sydney and his brief stay there (1841) and the voyage to NZ in 1842. He gives his impressions of Kororareka and Russell (Okiato) including a lengthy discussion of Hone Heke's actions in Kororareka and writes further of his residence in Auckland and Wellington. Volume also has an appendix (50 page Maori word list) Bennett was with the Royal Engineers. In 1844 he was in Kerikeri but after being ill for some months, died in 1845. Description: Title continues: `...commanding the station in New Zealand, concerning the evdnts which occurred in the Northern district of that island between 4th July, 1844 and the 31st of January 1846'. Writing to the Minister for Naval Affairs, France, he includes a graphic report on Hone Heke's war and ends his reports with a description of Auckland and gives his impression of the state of New Zealand at the time he left for Sydney. Description: The journal covers the period 3 Nov 1839-22 June and 22 July 1840 and is written in the form of a series of letters to members of his family. It describes the voyage out to New Zealand and contains an account of Hemery's impressions of Wellington, Thames, Kororareka and of the Maori population. Source of title - Transcribed from title page John Hemery was captain of the `Bengal Merchant', which sailed from Glasgow on 3 Oct 1839 and landed settlers at Wellington on 20 Feb 1840. Description: Journal covers the period 2 Jul 1819 to 31 Jan 1821 and contains a day-to-day log of of the voyage to Australia and New Zealand. It details the activities of the crew in the Bay of Islands, Hokianga and Whangaroa Harbour and mentions local Maori. Seven charts accompany the text. Baskerville was a midshipman on the Dromedary which, after delivering a load of convicts to Sydney, proceeded to New Zealand.
