Description: Forestry workers with timber transportation equipment in the Pukemako bush, 13 miles east of Mangapehi, Waikato. Shows several men standing on a log on a railway system through the trees, and another man on a 1934 Caterpillar diesel 75 tractor with a winch on the back. Photograph taken in 1935 by an unidentified photographer. Publication note - Department of Internal Affairs. 1939. `Making New Zealand' 1(9): 28 For further information regarding the tractor in this photograph see Ken Anderson, Servicing Caterpillar : the story of the Taumarunui branch of Gough Gough & Hamer (Taumarunui [N.Z.] : C & S Publications, 2000). The tractor was on an eight month contract that started in January 1935. Caterpillar dealers Gough Gough and Hamer contracted to sawmillers Ellis and Burnand Ltd, to demonstrate the advantage of using tractors in the bush. Ellis and Burnand purchased the machine at the start of 1936 and used it at Ongarue until 1943 when it went back to Mangapehi. It was eventually scrapped in the early 1950s.
