Description: View from across the Waikato River towards a steep hill with steps cut out of the riverside slope. The fence of a redoubt can be seen on top, with a gun to one side. A horse is being transported on a raft on the river, and another is carrying a load along the bank, led by a soldier. Probably copied from a watercolour by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams, although the exact model is not known. A closer view by Williams, 'Whangamarino, 12 March 1864' is in the Turnbull at E-249-050. Whangamarino Redoubt was constructed in 1863 and the wooden palisade was removed during 1864 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Scene inside a pa, with soldiers on guard and seated on the ground, a white horse pulling a cart to the left. The watercolour is a likely to be a copy of a watercolour by Colonel Edward Arthur Williams and is almost the same, apart from the placement of the soldiers, as a watercolour by Williams in the Turnbull Library entitled Picket at Nukumaru, 30 Jan.y 65. (A-210-019) Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Description: View on the southern flank of Maungatautari with soldiers among the long grass, firing towards the pa on the top of the nearby ridge. Two horses are galloping by and there is swampy land or a stream in the foreground. Gunsmoke from hidden Maori can be seen coming from the pa and from the foot of the hill. This was the final battle of the Waikato campaign of the New Zealand wars While many of Hamley's watercolours are copied from those of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, this work may be his own The additional title 'Maori Pah on hill' is in the hand of Anthony Murray-Oliver, a former staff member. In middle distance on rolling hills are: the fenced redoubt, other village buildings (said to be Te Awamutu on Hocken record for E A Williams original), including two churches, one at right and one at left. Copied from E A Williams' "Blewitt's Redoubt, Rangiawhia. 1864", in Hocken Library, page 53 of his diary. That view is said to show Te Awamutu.
