Description: Typed transcript of diary of a voyage to New Zealand on the `Lady Nugent'; farming at Lowry Bay, 1841-1843, at Purau, Banks Peninsula, 1843-1845 and at Motunau from 1845. Contains details of farming, trading and community activities and describes other Banks Peninsula and Wellington families. Also contains an account of journey from Lowry Bay via Wanganui to New Plymouth, Feb 1843 for trading reasons and up the Wairarapa coast in search of pastoral land. Description: Reminiscences written in 1910 of Mieville's life in New Zealand, mainly on Glenham Station in the Mataura Valley, Southland, and in Dunedin; transcribed and indexed by Marsha Donaldson. Includes shipboard accounts of the voyage to Port Chalmers on the 'Dominion' in 1851 with the Richardson family, a voyage home to England via Melbourne on the 'Thomas and Henry', and 'Royal Charter' in 1857, and the return voyage to Port Chalmers in 1858 on 'Agra'. He includes some of his wife's diary entries in his reminiscences. His first year in New Zealand was spent at Otepopo on the sheep station owned by Charles Suisted. Describes his stay in Christchurch, trips to Governor's Bay and Akaroa, to Hokitika via Arthur's Pass, trip to visit numerous sheep stations in South Canterbury, social events, cricket matches, balls, Professor Bickerton's lectures, Transit of Venus Expedition (lead by Major Palmer, R.E., chief astronomer), Canterbury runholders and settlers including Lysaght family, Thomas Potts (Ohinetahi), etc. Trip to North Island via Wellington, thermal region, Tauranga, Auckland, and return to Christchurch before leaving for England on the Merope in Jan 1875. Includes brief account of Walter's return voyage to New Zealand, Oct 1875-8 Feb 1876 on the Crusader.
