Description: Military map including Hokianga Harbour, north to Wangaroa Bay and northeast to the Bay of Islands during the New Zealand war of 1843-1847. Shows route taken by first military expedition, from the Bay of Islands to Tarrawahena Patuhoni's Pa along native route, and to May and June battle sites. Shows changing positions of Heke Pokai's pa sites where battles took place with the military forces [under Colonel William Hulme]. Shows mission stations, various pa sites, a cart road, forest land, rivers, the volcanic range and Mr William's farm. Inset shows Heke's pa at 1st July 1845, and the strategic position of two colonial military batteries 500 yards from the pa, one which includes native 'allies' and Walker's party.
