Alington, William Herbert, 1841-1938 :Dat tela fidelitas [ca 1900?]

By: Alington, William Herbert, 1841-1938

Reference: A-446-058

Description: Shows a coat of arms: at the top, a raised forearm and fist holding a stick or rod; in the middle, a shield bearing a blue and gold design, with a bird holding a sprig in its beak top left; at the bottom, the motto 'Dat tela fidelitas' (fidelity provides weapons) It is likely that the 'Winnie' referred to is Winifred Beatrice Alington, nee Durmergue, wife of George Hildebrand (hence 'Mrs Alington'). It would suggest that the coat of arms was made after they were married in 1893, and would seem to have been living in Christchurch. Beatrice and her two daughters, Winifred (Louie) and Hester (Maud), continued to live in Christchurch after George's death in 1905; her son, Edward Hugh, moved to Wellington. Notes at the top mention the related Tipping Family and Belergin (correctly Bellurgan) family.
